Position Summary

The Orthopedic Physician Assistant (PA) is an essential member of our healthcare team at Illinois Bone and Joint Institute LLC. This role involves delivering high-quality patient care and supporting the Physician/Surgeon along with the clinical staff. The PA will engage primarily in direct patient interactions, assisting physicians in both outpatient and inpatient environments, adhering to established protocols and practice guidelines to ensure optimal medical care and patient safety.

Key Responsibilities

  • Hospital and Surgical Center Duties:
  • Support the Surgeon by conducting patient rounds in the hospital as instructed.
  • Conduct hospital consultations as required.
  • Assist the surgeon during both major and minor surgical procedures in the operating room.
  • Prepare and position patients for surgery as necessary.
  • Manage surgical wound closures and provide post-operative care.
  • Apply necessary dressings, casts, and braces.
  • Perform minor surgical tasks within the scope of licensure.
  • Facilitate patient traction and adjustments as needed.
  • Coordinate patient care between the office and hospital settings, including writing orders for surgical patients and reporting on their conditions.
  • Oversee patient discharge processes, including prescriptions and educational instructions.
  • Ensure operative reports are completed promptly after procedures.
  • Participate in on-call duties as assigned by the supervising physician.

Office Responsibilities:

  • Conduct patient evaluations in the clinic, both independently and under supervision, and document progress notes.
  • Order relevant tests and collaborate with physicians to develop treatment plans.
  • Perform joint aspirations and injections.
  • Interpret imaging studies such as x-rays.
  • Apply casts and braces under physician supervision.
  • Remove sutures and drains as necessary.
  • Assist in managing physician calls and triaging patient inquiries.
  • Review lab and imaging results prior to patient consultations.
  • Discuss new patient findings with the physician for diagnosis and treatment planning.
  • Administer therapeutic injections and perform minor procedures as required.
  • Educate patients on pre-operative instructions and surgical processes.
  • Provide ongoing care to established and post-operative patients.
  • Prescribe medications and treatments in accordance with physician protocols.
  • Update patient care plans and consult with physicians as needed.
  • Order pre-operative tests and document findings using EHR software.
  • Adhere to billing guidelines and coding standards.
  • Respond to patient messages and document actions taken in their charts.

Qualifications:

  • Graduate from an accredited physician assistant program with residency completion.
  • Current Physician Assistant licensure in Illinois.
  • Preferred training in orthopedic care.
  • Master's degree in Physician Assistant Studies.
  • Active NCCPA certification.
  • ACLS certification is desirable; CPR certification is mandatory.

Experience:

  • Minimum of two years in a physician office or hospital setting preferred.
  • Ability to make independent clinical decisions.
  • Demonstrated competence and professional integrity.
  • Experience in assisting with surgical procedures.
  • Familiarity with managed care systems and Medicare populations.
  • Proficient in practice management and EHR software.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Effective communication skills for documentation and patient interaction.
  • Able to build and maintain professional relationships.
  • Capable of prioritizing tasks efficiently.

Work Environment:

  • Requires physical stamina for patient handling and lifting.
  • Normal visual and auditory capabilities are essential.
  • Exposure to clinical environments with potential health risks.
  • Travel to associated facilities may be required.
