Position Summary

The Physician Assistant (PA) is an essential member of our healthcare team at Illinois Bone and Joint Institute LLC. This role is centered around delivering high-quality patient care and supporting the Physician/Surgeon alongside the clinical staff. The PA will engage primarily in direct patient interactions, assisting physicians in both outpatient and inpatient environments while adhering to established protocols and practice guidelines to ensure optimal medical care and patient safety.

Key Responsibilities

  • Hospital and Surgical Center Duties:
    • Support the Surgeon by conducting patient rounds in the hospital as required.
    • Perform hospital consultations as instructed.
    • Assist the surgeon during both major and minor surgical operations.
    • Prepare and position patients for surgical procedures.
    • Manage surgical wound closures and provide post-operative care.
    • Administer dressings, casts, splints, and other supportive devices.
    • Conduct minor surgical interventions within the limits of licensure.
    • Facilitate patient traction and related adjustments.
    • Coordinate patient care between the office and hospital settings, including writing orders for surgical patients and reporting on their conditions.
    • Oversee patient discharge processes, including prescriptions and educational materials.
    • Ensure timely dictation of operative reports.
    • Participate in on-call duties as assigned by the supervising physician.

  • Office Responsibilities:
    • Conduct patient consultations independently and under supervision, documenting progress notes.
    • Order necessary diagnostic tests and collaborate with physicians to develop treatment plans.
    • Perform joint aspirations and injections.
    • Interpret imaging studies such as x-rays.
    • Apply casts and braces under physician supervision.
    • Remove sutures and manage post-operative care.
    • Assist in managing physician communications.
    • Review and analyze lab results and imaging studies prior to patient consultations.
    • Discuss new patient findings with the supervising physician.
    • Administer therapeutic injections and perform minor procedures as required.
    • Provide pre-operative instructions and explain surgical procedures to patients.
    • Deliver diagnosis and treatment services to established and post-operative patients.
    • Prescribe medications and treatments in accordance with physician protocols.
    • Update patient care plans and consult with physicians as necessary.
    • Order pre-operative tests and document findings using EHR software.
    • Adhere to relevant billing guidelines.
    • Respond to patient inquiries and document actions taken.

Scope of Practice

Under the direct supervision of the attending physician, the Physician Assistant may perform the following:

  • Patient Care:
    • Conduct initial and ongoing assessments of patients.
    • Gather medical histories and perform physical examinations.
    • Develop and implement treatment plans.
    • Provide basic patient care services, including wound assessments and dressing changes.
    • Execute minor procedures such as cast applications and suturing.
    • Perform additional procedures as needed.

  • Surgical Assistance:
    • Gather preoperative histories and conduct physical examinations.
    • Assist in the operating room during surgical procedures.
    • Provide education to patients and families regarding preoperative and postoperative care.

Documentation Responsibilities

  • Write treatment orders and diagnostic tests under the supervision of the attending physician.
  • Document operative notes and discharge summaries.

Work Environment

  • This position requires physical stamina, including the ability to lift and transfer patients.
  • Employees may be exposed to bodily fluids and communicable diseases.
  • Normal visual acuity and hearing are essential.
  • Work may involve irregular hours and stressful conditions.

Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program.
  • Current Illinois state licensure as a Physician Assistant.
  • Experience in orthopedic care is preferred.
  • Master's degree in Physician Assistant Studies.
  • Active NCCPA certification.
  • ACLS certification is desirable; CPR certification is required.

Experience:

  • Minimum of two years of experience in a clinical setting preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to make independent patient care decisions.
  • Strong judgment, integrity, and professional competence.
  • Experience in surgical assistance and patient diagnosis.
  • Familiarity with managed care systems and EHR software.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
