Job Summary

The City of Augusta GA is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Chief Building Official to join our team. As a key member of our Planning and Development department, you will be responsible for ensuring that all construction projects in the city comply with local, state, and federal building codes and regulations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage and Direct Staff: Supervise and evaluate assigned staff, providing guidance and support to ensure the effective enforcement of building codes and regulations.
  • Organize and Prioritize Work: Develop and implement work schedules to ensure adequate coverage and control, prioritizing and scheduling work activities to meet objectives.
  • Develop and Implement Policies and Procedures: Formulate and develop work methods and practices, policies, standard operating procedures, and training programs to ensure compliance with building codes and regulations.
  • Develop and Implement Budget: Forecast expenditures and revenues, including staffing, equipment, and supplies, monitoring expenditures to ensure compliance with approved budget.
  • Interpret and Enforce Building Codes: Research and interpret code-related issues, developing and implementing new programs to ensure the safety and welfare of the public and environment.
  • Provide Technical Assistance: Provide information and technical assistance to staff members, the public, builders, developers, and others on code interpretation, code requirements, construction plan review, building permits, building inspections, and code violations/compliance.
  • Ensure Compliance: Ensure compliance with all applicable codes, laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures, adhering to established safety procedures and utilizing precautionary safety equipment.
  • Maintain Knowledge and Awareness: Maintain a comprehensive, current knowledge and awareness of applicable laws, regulations, and industry trends, attending workshops and training sessions as appropriate.
Requirements
  • Education: Associate's Degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related skilled trades area.
  • Experience: Seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience enforcing building codes and ordinances, including lead or supervisory experience.
  • Certifications: Possess four ICC Certifications, including Building Plans Examiners, Commercial Building Inspector, and one Mechanical, Electrical, or Plumbing Inspector Certification.
  • Licensing: Must possess a valid Georgia or South Carolina driver's license.
