Overview:

The Histology Technician plays a crucial role in the preparation and analysis of human tissue specimens, aiding in the understanding of tissue and organ functionality, as well as disease progression, while adhering to established protocols and standards.

Key Responsibilities:


• Demonstrates proficiency in the OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.

• Collects, processes, and archives surgical and cytological specimens.

• Inputs patient data, orders, and technical details into the Laboratory Information System (LIS); organizes and prints cassettes.

• Prepares specimens, slides, and blocks for external referrals.

• Manages referral logs, processes reports, and tracks pending items.

• Maintains cleanliness and organization in the grossing area, frozen section room, and autopsy suite, including supply management and solution preparation.

• Executes technical procedures to create high-quality microscopic slide preparations.

• Within established turnaround time guidelines, develops and oversees routine and specialized staining processes to produce slides for microscopic evaluation of various specimens.

• Operates essential laboratory equipment such as microtomes, embedding stations, tissue processors, and staining devices to ensure quality slide production for pathologist review.

• Utilizes Immunostainers to generate diagnostic immunostains.

• Conducts manual staining as necessary to ensure the quality of diagnostic slides.

• Assists Pathologists and Pathologist Assistants with frozen sections, fine needle aspirations, and autopsy procedures.

• Engages in Quality Control and Improvement initiatives, documenting analyses in accordance with CLIA, CAP, and Joint Commission standards.

• Responsible for laboratory management, including daily maintenance, troubleshooting, supply ordering, and reviewing policy manuals.

• Pursues ongoing education and development by participating in in-house educational programs and training new staff.

• Completes assigned tasks or special projects within designated timeframes as directed by supervisors or management.

• Adheres to accreditation standards and participates in inspections as required.

• Follows established safety, infection control, security, compliance, and hazardous material protocols.

Qualifications:

Education and Skills:

  • Preferred: High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Required: Completion of an accredited Histotechnology Program by CAHEA/NAACLS or military equivalent.
  • Required: Successful completion of the core educational curriculum "Excellence at the Front End" within one year of employment.

Experience:

  • Required: 2 years of experience in histopathology with a High School Diploma.
  • Required: 1 year of experience in histopathology with an Associate's degree.

Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications:

  • Preferred: Certified Healthcare Access Associate through the National Association of Healthcare Access Management (NAHAM).
  • Preferred: Histotechnology certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP).
