Overview:
The Histology Technician plays a vital role in the preparation and analysis of human tissue specimens, contributing to the understanding of tissue and organ function, as well as the diagnosis and progression of diseases, adhering to established standards and protocols.
Key Responsibilities:
• Demonstrates proficiency in OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.
• Collects, processes, and preserves surgical and cytological specimens.
• Inputs patient data, orders, and technical details into the Laboratory Information System (LIS); organizes and prints cassettes.
• Prepares specimens, slides, and blocks for external referrals.
• Manages referral logs, processes reports, and oversees pending items.
• Maintains cleanliness and organization in the grossing area, frozen section room, and autopsy suite, including the stocking of supplies and preparation of solutions.
• Executes technical procedures to create high-quality microscopic slide preparations.
• Within established turnaround time (TAT) guidelines, develops and implements routine and special staining techniques to ensure accurate slides for microscopic evaluation of tissues, fluids, and other specimens.
• Operates various laboratory equipment such as microtomes, embedding stations, tissue processors, and staining devices to produce quality slides for pathologist review.
• Utilizes Immunostainers to generate diagnostic immunostains.
• Conducts manual staining as necessary to ensure quality diagnostic slides.
• Assists Pathologists and Pathology Assistants with frozen sections, fine needle aspirations, and autopsies.
• Engages in Quality Control and Improvement by performing analyses and documenting QC in accordance with policy and procedure, following CLIA, CAP, and Joint Commission standards.
• Responsible for Maintenance and Lab Management by conducting routine preventative maintenance, troubleshooting minor issues, and managing supply inventory.
• Pursues Continuing Education and Development by participating in 10-12 in-house educational programs annually and training new staff in established practices.
• Completes assigned tasks or special projects within designated timeframes as requested by Supervisors, Managers, or Directors.
• Adheres to accreditation standards set by CAP, AABB, Compliance, CLIA, JCAHO, and OSHA, and prepares for all relevant inspections.
• Follows established safety protocols, infection control measures, security guidelines, and regulations regarding hazardous materials.
Qualifications:
Education/Skills:
- Preferred: High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Required: Completion of an accredited Histotechnology Program by CAHEA/NAACLS or military equivalent.
- Required: Successful completion of the core educational curriculum "Excellence at the Front End" within one year of employment.
Experience:
- Required: 2 years of experience in histopathology with a High School Diploma.
- Required: 1 year of experience in histopathology with an Associate's degree.
Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications:
- Preferred: Certified Healthcare Access Associate through the National Association of Healthcare Access Management (NAHAM).
- Preferred: Histotechnology certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP).
