Overview:
The Histology Technician plays a crucial role in the preparation and analysis of human tissue specimens, contributing to the understanding of tissue function and disease progression, adhering to established protocols and industry standards.
Key Responsibilities:
• Demonstrates proficiency in the OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.
• Collects, processes, and archives surgical and cytological specimens.
• Inputs patient data, orders, and technical details into the Laboratory Information System (LIS); organizes and prints cassettes.
• Prepares specimens, slides, and blocks for external referrals.
• Manages the referral log, processes reports, and tracks pending items.
• Maintains cleanliness and organization in the grossing area, frozen section room, and autopsy suite, including supply management and solution preparation.
• Executes technical procedures to create high-quality microscopic slide preparations.
• Within established turnaround time (TAT) guidelines, develops and oversees routine and specialized staining processes to ensure appropriate slides for microscopic examination of tissues and fluids.
• Operates microtomes, embedding stations, tissue processors, staining equipment, cover slippers, and other laboratory apparatus to produce quality slides for pathologist review.
• Utilizes Immunostainers to generate diagnostic immunostains.
• Performs manual staining as necessary to ensure quality diagnostic slides.
• Assists Pathologists and Pathologist Assistants with frozen sections, fine needle aspirations, and autopsies.
• Engages in Quality Control and Improvement activities, conducting analyses and documenting quality control measures in accordance with CLIA, CAP, and Joint Commission standards.
• Conducts routine maintenance and management of laboratory equipment, troubleshooting minor issues and initiating service requests as needed; oversees inventory and restocking of supplies and reagents; reviews and updates policy and procedure manuals.
• Pursues ongoing education and professional development, participating in a minimum of 10-12 in-house educational programs annually; mentors new staff in established practices.
• Completes assigned tasks or special projects within designated timeframes as requested by supervisors or management.
• Adheres to accreditation standards set by CAP, AABB, Compliance, CLIA, JCAHO, and OSHA, participating in all relevant inspections.
• Follows established safety protocols, infection control measures, and guidelines for handling hazardous materials.
Qualifications:
Education and Skills
- High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Completion of an accredited Histotechnology Program by CAHEA/NAACLS or military equivalent required.
- Successful completion of the core educational curriculum "Excellence at the Front End" required within one year of employment.
Experience
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in histopathology required with a High School Diploma.
- Minimum of 1 year of experience in histopathology required with an Associate's degree.
Certifications
- Certified Healthcare Access Associate through the National Association of Healthcare Access Management (NAHAM) preferred.
- Histotechnology certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) preferred.
