Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Traffic Engineer to join our dynamic team at the Commonwealth of Virginia. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for providing technical advice, guidance, and training on assigned engineering program areas.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct traffic engineering studies and prepare analyses, reports, and recommendations based on engineering determinations.
  • Provide engineering support and consultation related to engineering program areas.
  • Effectively manage assigned projects to ensure timely and accurate completion.
  • Communicate with internal VDOT staff, local government staff, consultants, citizens, and FHWA regarding transportation projects and programs.
Requirements
  • Ability to design plans for traffic control devices, incorporating traffic engineering requirements into roadway plans and making recommendations for plan changes.
  • Ability to conduct traffic engineering studies involving traffic operations, traffic control devices, and roadway and pedestrian safety and capacity issues.
  • Ability to collect and analyze traffic-related data.
  • Considerable experience gathering data, developing recommendations, and making presentations.
  • Extensive knowledge of traffic engineering principles, practices, and standards.
  • Experience writing and presenting technical reports/solutions to diverse audiences/stakeholders.
  • Organizational and time management skills necessary to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Skill in the use of computers and web-based software applications, including Microsoft 365.
  • Skilled in the use of computers and software applications, including traffic engineering software (such as Highway Capacity Software, Synchro/SimTraffic, CORSIM, VISSIM, SIDRA, etc.) and CADD design software (such as MicroStation, GuideSIGN, etc.).
Preferred Qualifications
  • A combination of training, experience, or education in Civil Engineering or a related field.
