Position Overview:

This role is essential in enhancing the public service capabilities of the University Libraries by effectively overseeing student and staff personnel, engaging in reference desk duties, and providing customer service and technical support.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Recruit, train, manage, and schedule student employees to ensure high-quality user assistance and customer service.
  2. Engage in the reference desk rotation, delivering reference support to library patrons.
  3. Participate in service desk operations (circulation and reserves) and address public service challenges.
  4. Recruit, train, supervise, and assess Library Specialist(s) and/or staff members.
  5. Collaborate with Library Systems personnel to identify and resolve issues related to public computing services; may also liaise with integrated library system (ILS) staff to address ILS concerns.
  6. Contribute as a member of the Libraries' Public Workstations Committee to develop and review policies regarding public computing services.
  7. Perform additional job-related tasks as assigned.

Additional Job Duties:
  • Oversee the hiring, training, supervision, scheduling, and evaluation of a full-time Senior Library Specialist, a part-time Library Assistant (currently vacant), and student library assistants.
  • Maintain the Music Library's configurations within the Alma integrated library system.
  • Act as a liaison for access functions to the embedded libraries of UH Libraries, including UH Clear Lake and UH Downtown branches.
  • Compile daily and monthly statistics regarding all access-related activities in the Music Library.
  • Develop, document, and implement processes and procedures for the Music Library.
  • Collaborate with the Music Library team to advance strategic initiatives.
  • Utilize social media to promote Music Library resources, services, and events, as well as to showcase faculty research and student accomplishments.
  • Coordinate faculty course and personal reserves.
  • Provide specialized reference support for faculty and students.
  • Facilitate in-house repairs of books and music scores.
  • Initiate supply orders, work orders, and technology requests.
  • Provide basic maintenance for facilities.
  • Participate in cross-departmental committees.

Qualifications:

Associates degree with a minimum of three years of relevant experience is required.

Applicants should possess the analytical skills necessary for interpreting procedures, policies, and practices, which can be acquired through specialized education or training programs. Advanced vocational skills or foundational knowledge in a professional field are essential. An Associate's degree or certification in a technical specialty program lasting over 18 months and up to three years is typical for this role. A minimum of three years of directly related experience is mandatory.

Additional Information:
  • At least one year of experience in access services/circulation is required.
  • Supervisory experience is necessary.
  • A background in music or the performing arts is preferred.
  • Experience may be accepted in lieu of educational qualifications.
  • Education may be accepted in lieu of experience.
