Job Title: Transit Bus Technician

Join the City of Charlottesville, VA team as a Transit Bus Technician and play a crucial role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of our public transportation system.

Job Summary:

The Transit Bus Technician is responsible for performing complex technical work in the inspection, maintenance, and repair of heavy diesel-powered transit buses, diesel-electric hybrid powered buses, minibuses/paratransit buses (cutaway buses), City vehicles, and equipment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Diagnose, adjust, repair, overhaul, and service heavy diesel-powered transit buses, diesel-electric hybrid powered buses, cutaway buses, City vehicles, and related equipment.
  • Remove, break down, and rebuild components and assemblies, such as engines, multi-speed transmissions, electrical systems, air conditioning systems, hydraulic systems, and power trains.
  • Operate various types of shop equipment, machinery, precision instruments, specialized tools, and devices.
  • Perform repairs and scheduled preventative maintenance, including changing oil, checking fluid levels, cleaning and lubricating parts, and rotating tires.
  • Inspect City vehicles for compliance with safety and emission control standards.
  • Read and interpret diagnostic test results to identify mechanical problems.
  • Review appropriate checklists to ensure that all critical parts are examined.
  • Follow safety instructions and attend appropriate safety training.
  • Follow appropriate procedures for data and records of work performed.
  • Respond to road calls and other emergency calls for service, ensuring passenger and employee safety.
  • Operate a City vehicle in the performance of the job duties, including test driving vehicles.
  • May install bus stop amenities such as signs, sign poles, benches, and shelters as needed.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area and garage shop.
  • Perform all requirements and have knowledge of Department of Transportation and Federal Transit Administration requirements for transit bus operation.
  • Responsible for appropriate use and maintenance of City equipment, tools, and other resources, including work time.
  • Regular and reliable attendance.
  • Subject to being called back to work to the City in emergencies or as needed to provide necessary services to the public.
Requirements:
  • Technical or trade school in automotive maintenance and one (1) year of work experience in problem diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of a wide variety of automotive equipment.
  • High school diploma or GED and three (3) years of work experience in problem diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of a wide variety of automotive equipment.
  • Five (5) years of work experience in problem diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of a wide variety of automotive equipment.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the specific requirements listed above.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working with heavy and/or specialized diesel equipment.
  • ASE certification(s) in H Series for Transit Bus, preferred but not required.
Working Conditions:

The Transit Bus Technician works in a shop/garage environment, with exposure to loud noise, vibration, atmospheric conditions, and roadway safety hazards. The position requires the ability to work in confined spaces, with acidic or harsh substances, and with allergens and fuels.
