Position Overview:
The Geotechnical Engineer plays a crucial role in conducting subsurface investigations and engineering assessments for site development projects. This position also involves forensic investigations and supporting design plans related to earth retaining structures, wastewater treatment systems, and foundation underpinning. Additionally, responsibilities may extend to overseeing construction phase testing and inspections.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct both routine and complex field exploration programs across diverse project types.
- Effectively communicate field investigation directives to drilling teams and subcontractors based on the geotechnical scope of the project.
- Supervise engineering services during construction, focusing on shallow and deep foundations, excavation support, and earthwork operations.
- Relay field results from subsurface explorations to the project team and clients as necessary.
- Document subsurface composition and groundwater levels through detailed field boring and test pit logs.
- Analyze field data to develop geotechnical engineering recommendations and considerations for overall project development.
- Coordinate laboratory testing based on field findings.
- Compile construction phase inspection reports that include engineering observations and test results for project managers' review.
- Prepare initial geotechnical engineering reports incorporating field investigation data and analyses.
- Review project documents to identify relevant geotechnical factors.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, Soil Science, Geology, or a related field; concentration in geotechnical engineering is preferred.
- 0-3 years of experience in geotechnical consulting, construction material inspections, or laboratory testing.
- Experience in construction phase testing and inspection is advantageous.
- Ability to work in both outdoor and office environments as required.
- Engineer in Training (EIT) certification is preferred or the ability to obtain it.
- Valid driver's license and capability to operate personal or company vehicles.
- Preferred certifications include ACI concrete field-testing technician, OSHA training, and experience with geotechnical software.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with mapping websites for site investigations.
- Independent thinker with the ability to work autonomously and collaboratively.
Physical Demands:
The role requires the ability to perform essential functions, including standing, walking, climbing, and lifting up to 75 pounds. Visual acuity is necessary for data analysis and site inspections.
Work Environment:
Field inspections may occur during various times dictated by construction schedules, requiring adaptability to both indoor and outdoor conditions. Outdoor work may involve exposure to different weather conditions and potential hazards.
