Job Summary

Columbus Humane is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Animal Care Attendant to join our team. As a key member of our animal care team, you will be responsible for ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of the animals in our care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Clean and maintain animal living environments to prevent the spread of disease and ensure a safe and healthy environment for all animals.
  • Provide daily walks and enrichment activities for dogs and other animals to promote physical and mental stimulation.
  • Monitor and report any changes or concerns in animal health or behavior to management and veterinary staff.
  • Follow established safety protocols to prevent injury to yourself and others, and maintain a high standard of animal handling and care.
  • Assist with observing and documenting animal behavior and health to inform euthanasia decisions when necessary.
  • Collaborate with volunteers to provide additional care and enrichment for animals in our shelter.
  • Enter accurate and timely memos and data into our Petpoint software system to track animal behavior and health.
  • Support the development of skills and knowledge among staff to advance our mission and goals.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • Basic animal care and handling skills.
  • A commitment to maintaining high standards of animal care and supporting the mission of Columbus Humane.
  • The ability to work with and around animals for extended periods.
Education and Experience

A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Previous experience in animal care or a related field is an asset.

Language Skills

Effective verbal and written communication skills are essential for this role, as you will need to maintain accurate records and communicate with colleagues and management.

Certifications and Licenses

Fear Free certification is required, or the ability to become Fear Free certified within 30 days of hire.

Physical Demands

This role requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds with reasonable accommodation, as well as frequent bending, stretching, and standing for extended periods.

Work Environment

This role is performed in a normal animal shelter setting, with exposure to hazardous chemicals and potential risks associated with animal handling.
