At Southwest Research Institute, the Embedded Systems Section within the Strategic Aerospace Department delivers extensive engineering solutions for projects that encompass systems engineering, technology integration, requirements development, cybersecurity, and the design, production, and maintenance of both hardware and software systems tailored for the aerospace sector. Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist in the fabrication, assembly, and testing of avionics electronic systems, including the assembly and disassembly of Avionics Line Replaceable Units (LRUs) and Circuit Card Assemblies (CCAs).
  • Utilize avionics equipment and both analog and digital testing instruments.
  • Construct wiring harnesses for aircraft and other applications.
  • Collaborate with Electrical and Printed Wiring Board (PWB) Design engineers to resolve manufacturing discrepancies with technical drawings.
  • Support engineering personnel in the testing of produced items and any necessary rework to ensure full operational capability of assemblies.


Daily and Monthly Duties:
  • Adhere to written and verbal directives to connect computer hardware to laboratory and field testing electronics.
  • Assist in the setup and execution of product acceptance testing.
  • Under the guidance of the Lead Technician, diagnose and repair electronic systems and assemblies.
  • Participate in outdoor testing, complex assembly tasks, and on-site work that may require working at heights and on military facilities/platforms.
  • Under the supervision of the Lead Technician, perform soldering in compliance with IPC standards for avionics flight-worthy hardware.


Qualifications:
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Preferred background includes industry and/or military training in electronics, particularly NASA/IPC soldering.
  • 1-4 years of experience with basic DC/AC circuits, electro-mechanical construction skills, and fabrication techniques for assembling printed circuit boards, multi-pin control cables, RF coaxial cables, and basic electronics assembly.
  • Experience operating laboratory test equipment such as oscilloscopes, signal generators, and multi-meters, along with basic computer skills including familiarity with PC hardware and software.
  • Proficiency in a Microsoft Windows environment; strong communication skills are essential for effective interaction with personnel and suppliers.
  • Ability to interpret engineering schematics and assembly drawings.
  • A valid driver's license is mandatory.


Additional Requirements:

The selected candidate will undergo a government security investigation and must meet eligibility criteria for access to classified information. U.S. citizenship is required.
