Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Staff Battery Cell Engineer to lead the development and integration of battery cells for our electric vehicles. This role will be responsible for designing and implementing cell requirements, collaborating with suppliers to select and develop optimal cell technologies, and ensuring seamless integration of cells into our battery management systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Cell Development and Integration: Lead the development of cell designs from concept to mass production, ensuring they meet our stringent requirements for performance, safety, and reliability.
  • Supplier Collaboration: Work closely with cell suppliers to select and develop optimal cell technologies that meet our requirements for different applications and products.
  • Cell Testing and Validation: Design, develop, and execute test methods to evaluate various lithium-ion battery cell chemistries, and coordinate internal and external testing resources.
  • Cell Selection and Decision-Making: Drive the decision-making process for cell selection based on test results, ensuring the chosen cells meet our performance, safety, and reliability standards.
  • Modeling and Simulation: Work with modeling engineers to extract parameters from cells and help build and validate models for battery management systems.
  • Cell Degradation Analysis: Use electrochemical techniques to identify cell degradation mechanisms and develop strategies to mitigate them.
  • Control and Estimation Algorithms: Use cell testing data to support the development of control and estimation algorithms used in battery management systems.
  • Pack Design and Development: Collaborate with pack design engineers to define pathways to improve cell and pack design, enhancing performance and lifetime while developing intellectual property for Rivian battery cell technology.
  • Cell Failure Analysis: Conduct cell failure analysis for cell-related field issues, identifying root causes and developing mitigation strategies.
  • Research and Development: Stay up-to-date with the latest research and developments in lithium-ion cells and beyond, applying this knowledge to advance Rivian's battery cell technology.
  • Training and Knowledge Sharing: Train other engineers and technicians on cell design, testing, and integration best practices.
Requirements
  • Education: Master's degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, or materials science, with 5+ years of experience in hands-on testing of lithium-ion batteries (Ph.D. preferred).
  • Experience: Demonstrated experience in characterizing lithium-ion cells, with a strong understanding of electrochemistry properties and electrochemical techniques such as EIS, GITT, CV, and PITT.
  • Skills: Strong understanding of cell components and their interactions, good knowledge of cell design, and excellent communication and project management skills.
  • Nice to Have: Experience in estimating lifetime of lithium-ion batteries, knowledge of fast charge development, and experience with data analysis tools such as Python.
