RESPONSIBILITIES OF A WINDSHEAR TEST CELL TECHNICIAN:
Job responsibilities will evolve and be assigned based on individual expertise. Specific skills in mechanical and electrical maintenance, instrumentation, calibration, computer systems, networks, automotive mechanics, and knowledge of the racing industry are essential.
The technician will be versatile and expected to support all operational functions, including:
- Operating the test cell
- Ensuring the quality of vehicle instrumentation
- Installing test vehicles in the facility
- Setting up test hardware on test articles
- Providing general test support activities
- Programming automated test procedures using wind tunnel control software
- Conducting mechanical component assembly and maintenance tasks.
Qualifications:
MINIMUM EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, AND/OR SKILL REQUIREMENTS:
A minimum of two (2) years of college coursework in engineering, automotive, skilled trades, or related fields, along with two (2) years of relevant experience. Additional relevant education may substitute for part of the experience.
Essential skills for this position include:
- Vehicle Mechanics: This role requires expertise in vehicle chassis setup for wind tunnel testing, including tire changes, shock/strut replacements, and component installations/removals. A comprehensive understanding of vehicle suspension, hydraulic systems, motors, mechanical screw devices, bearings, and rotating equipment is crucial. Precision work with knowledge of assemblies, mechanical fit, and torque specifications is required.
- Fabrication: Proficiency in machine shop tools for constructing and assembling fixtures/components is necessary. (Tools include lathe, mill, brake, shear, drill press, and band-saw)
- Maintenance: Support for mechanical and/or electrical/instrumentation maintenance activities is expected.
- Test Operations Controls and Data Acquisition: A working knowledge of instrumentation, controls, and data acquisition is essential to support wind tunnel operations and programming of test sequences (Lab View experience or equivalent is advantageous).
- Computer Skills: Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets, and file management is mandatory (additional skills in database programming and computer networking are a plus).
- Team Collaboration: A willingness to work within a team and assume leadership roles in defined tasks is important.
- Troubleshooting: A systematic approach to problem identification and resolution is necessary.
- Customer Service Orientation: Strong character traits and personality geared towards customer service are essential. Clear communication skills are a must.
