About Zipline

Zipline is a pioneering company that aims to revolutionize the way goods move. Our mission is to create a seamless and efficient logistics system that serves all humans equally, regardless of their location.

We are transforming the way things move for businesses, governments, and consumers by leveraging cutting-edge technology, including robotics and autonomy. Our goal is to decarbonize delivery, decrease road congestion, and reduce fossil fuel consumption and air pollution.

By joining Zipline, you will be part of a team that is passionate about making a positive impact on the world. We are looking for talented individuals who share our vision and are eager to contribute to our mission.

The Role

We are seeking an experienced and dynamic individual to lead our embedded software team as the Head of Embedded Software Engineering. In this role, you will be responsible for leading a team of talented engineers and developing a software stack that enables Zipline to create reliable safety-critical systems at high velocity.

This includes developing software for our aircraft, ground infrastructure, and hardware testers, with the goal of achieving the highest standards of performance and reliability in some of the toughest environments on Earth.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Lead, mentor, and grow a team of embedded engineers and leaders, providing a clear vision and ambitious goals while maintaining a focus on technical excellence.
  2. Cultivate a high-performance team culture that champions a bias to action and strives for radically simple designs.
  3. Provide technical leadership in system-level design, bringing expertise in Linux, Microcontrollers, or Real-Time Operating Systems.
  4. Collaborate across teams and disciplines to architect safety-critical systems, including flight computers, radios, safety systems, communication buses, battery management, and motor control systems.
  5. Establish and enforce best practices for embedded software development, code review, and documentation.
  6. Set the technical and product vision for the embedded team.
Requirements
  • Demonstrated success as a lead-of-leads, inspiring, managing, and growing high-performing engineering teams to deliver embedded software for world-first safety-critical products.
  • Deep technical expertise in embedded software engineering, with a track record of making impactful architectural-level contributions.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills to explain and motivate technical vision, technical challenges, and solutions to fellow engineers and non-engineers alike.
