Job Overview:
This position plays a critical role in the State of Montana's health services by reviewing and analyzing patient health records to identify relevant diagnoses and procedures. The purpose of this position is to apply the appropriate diagnostic and procedural codes to individual patient health information for data retrieval, analysis, and claims processing.
Key Responsibilities:
- Apply knowledge of ICD-10-CN, CPT, DSM-5, and HCPCS coding and classification systems to accurately assign codes.
- Utilize medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and disease processes to analyze patient health records.
- Maintain knowledge of HIPAA, state and federal regulations, health care standards, and hospital policy regarding Protected Health Information privacy and confidentiality practices.
- Provide excellent customer service to patients, healthcare providers, and other stakeholders.
- Develop and maintain accurate and detailed records of patient health information.
- Collaborate with healthcare teams to ensure accurate and timely data entry and processing.
- Stay up-to-date with changing coding guidelines, regulations, and industry standards.
Requirements:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Medical Coding certificate or Associates Degree in Health Information Management or equivalent from an accredited college or technical school.
- 1-year medical coding work experience can substitute for the education listed above.
- AHIMA or AAPC certification such as Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or Certified Professional Coder (CPC) is preferred.
