Primary Responsibilities

  1. Examine and assess mortgage loan submissions to confirm their accuracy, completeness, and compliance with underwriting standards for both conventional and government-backed loans.
  2. Analyze borrowers' financial documentation, including income statements, asset reports, credit histories, and employment verification to evaluate their creditworthiness and associated risks.
  3. Review property appraisals and collateral to ensure they align with lending criteria and standards.
  4. Calculate financial ratios, such as debt-to-income ratios, to evaluate the borrower's repayment capacity.
  5. Engage in effective communication with loan officers, processors, and other relevant parties to gather additional information or clarification regarding loan applications.
  6. Render loan approvals or rejections based on underwriting assessments, providing clear and detailed rationales for each decision.
  7. Keep abreast of updates in mortgage lending laws, underwriting practices, and market trends.
  8. Work collaboratively with compliance and risk management teams to ensure that loan files adhere to regulatory requirements and company protocols.

Required Qualifications

  1. A degree in Finance, Business Administration, or a related discipline is preferred.
  2. A minimum of X years of experience in mortgage underwriting, particularly with both conventional and government loan programs.
  3. In-depth knowledge of mortgage lending regulations, guidelines, and industry best practices.
  4. Proficiency in utilizing underwriting software and tools relevant to the mortgage sector.
  5. Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with a meticulous attention to detail.
  6. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, capable of conveying complex information in a clear and concise manner.
  7. Able to thrive in a dynamic environment while managing multiple tasks effectively.
  8. Preferred certification as a Mortgage Underwriter (e.g., NAMU, NAMP).
  9. Experience with automated underwriting systems (e.g., DU, LP) is advantageous.
  10. A demonstrated commitment to confidentiality and integrity in managing sensitive borrower data.
