Position Overview:

The Laboratory Sample Processing Specialist plays a crucial role in supporting the operations within the Specimen Processing Department at Spelman College's Advanced Diagnostic Laboratories.

This position involves a variety of essential tasks, including but not limited to:

  • Data entry for test orders
  • Presorting, collecting, and delivering specimens
  • Ensuring proper specimen management, including centrifugation and aliquoting

All responsibilities are carried out in accordance with the quality assurance and quality control guidelines established by the Advanced Diagnostic Laboratories quality system.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Adhere to established laboratory policies and procedures, reviewing and signing relevant SOPs annually.
  • Manage the receipt and processing of samples across multiple laboratories.
  • Collaborate closely with phlebotomy staff to guarantee the timely delivery of critical samples.
  • Maintain effective communication with laboratory personnel regarding the status of sample deliveries and receipts.
  • Identify and address issues related to specimen types, such as missing information, and escalate concerns as necessary.
  • Perform data entry and quality control for all patient and client information within the Laboratory Information System (LIS) for sample tracking.
  • Understand clinical department requirements concerning specimen types and their relation to ordered tests, ensuring proper preparation for biological processing.
  • Stay informed about compliance regulations related to test ordering, which may evolve regularly.

Qualifications:

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; college-level coursework in Biology or related life sciences preferred.
  • Experience: A minimum of six months of relevant experience in a laboratory setting or lab assistant training, with familiarity in medical terminology.
  • Special Training: None required.
