Job Summary
The Lactation Consultant role at Mary Washington Healthcare is a vital part of our mission to provide exceptional patient care and support. As a Lactation Consultant, you will work closely with breastfeeding women and families to help them achieve their breastfeeding goals. This is a per-diem, day shift position, offering a flexible schedule and the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in our community.
Key Responsibilities
As a Lactation Consultant, your key responsibilities will include:
- Conducting thorough assessments of breastfeeding mothers and infants to identify areas for improvement and develop personalized plans to support their breastfeeding goals.
- Providing education and support to breastfeeding mothers and their families, including guidance on proper latch technique, positioning, and feeding frequency.
- Collaborating with our nursing team to ensure seamless care and communication with breastfeeding mothers and their families.
- Developing and implementing lactation plans to address complex breastfeeding issues, such as nipple soreness, milk supply, and breast engorgement.
- Providing ongoing support and education to breastfeeding mothers and their families through regular phone calls, emails, and in-person visits.
- Participating in our lactation committee to stay up-to-date on the latest breastfeeding research and best practices.
- Teaching prenatal breastfeeding classes to expectant mothers and their partners, providing education on breastfeeding benefits, techniques, and troubleshooting common issues.
- Performing other duties as assigned by our nursing leadership team.
Requirements
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- An International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) certification or be enrolled in a course preparing to take the certification exam within one year.
- A valid RN license from Virginia or a reciprocal compact state.
- AHA BLS Provider CPR certification at hire.
- 1-2 years of experience in postpartum or couplet care in a hospital or comparable setting.
Salary
The salary range for this position is $60,000 - $80,000 per year, depending on experience.
