Responsibilities- Installs, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs electrical wiring systems, fixtures, and controls.
- Performs preventative electrical system maintenance on historic ships and in visitor centers, museums, housing areas, maintenance facilities, public buildings, residences, concessions facilities, and partner facilities and/or shops.
- Performs welding on historic metals and alloys such as cast iron, wrought iron, steel and its alloys, copper and its alloys, zinc, and galvanized metal.
- Welds worn, broken, or missing metal parts of historic ships, piping systems and pressure vessels on historic and/or modern boiler tubes and fuel supply pipes.
- Performs a variety of forging operations such as drawing, upsetting, bending, twisting, scoring, hacking, rolling, beveling, and punching on bars and ingots of metal stock.
- Fabricates marine related metal tools and parts to historic standards such as metal brackets, stands, tanks, boxes, carts, gates, ramps, grates, and other tools, jigs and fittings as needed.
- Maintains and repairs the gangways and related gear and work with other members of the crew.
- Performs boiler making work to include providing metal work support on the historic ship's engines, auxiliaries, boilers, stacks, and related gear.
- Performs ship fitting work on riveted bulkheads and bulwarks, port lights, deck fittings, specialized fastenings, stanchions, components of the mooring system, mast and spare parts, and other components.
- Rolls, bends, flanges, cuts, and otherwise shapes plates, beams, and other heavy metal parts, using various shop machinery, such as plate rolls, hydraulic presses, bending brakes, joggle machines, and combinations of punching, shearing, and metering machines.
- Assembles the various pieces to form the required part. Install and fit parts on ships. Removes, repairs or replaces damaged parts of ship structures.
- U.S. Citizenship required.
- Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
- Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
- Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
- You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required.
- You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record.
- You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
- You will be required to lift at least 100 pounds.
- You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
- You may be required to work overtime.
- If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
- You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
- You will be required to complete OSHA High Voltage Electrical Safety within 6 months of entering on duty.
- You will be required to complete Confined Space, and Lockout/Tagout Training within 6 months of entering on duty.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
EducationThere is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.

Physical DemandsThis position's time is split between performing work on historic ships and marine environments,and performing work inside facilities, buildings, and structures.
Physical demands aboard ships are severe because of the unusual spaces and the locations of many of the boilers and engines.
The incumbent may work in close quarters aboard ship in which frequent bending, reaching, stooping, crawling, and crouching is required.
The incumbent frequently lifts and carries items up to 50 pounds, carrying heavier items with help.
The incumbent must be able to bend, walk, stand, and crawl for long periods of time.
When working inside facilities, buildings, and structures, the work requires moderate to heavy effort.
The incumbent may be required to lift or handle objects or materials weighing up to 100 pounds, unassisted, following proper lifting procedures to avoid injury.
The work requires standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring and cramped positions.
Working ConditionsThis position works indoors and outdoors, aboard ships, on piers, in shops, and throughout park facilities; and is exposed to temperatures ranging from 30 to 90 + degrees Fahrenheit.
The incumbent may work from ladders, scaffolds, and ropes; and around power equipment and moving/rotating machinery where constant noise, fumes, dust, grease, oil, chemicals, and other toxic agents may be present.
The incumbent's clothing may become soiled from grease, dust, and chemicals and may also be exposed to energized circuits and electrical rotary devices.
The work is often very dirty, or of such a nature that special protective equipment such as hard hats, safety-toe shoes/boots, goggles, respirators, ear protectors, clothing, etc.

The potential for burns is high, as is the possibility of cuts, abrasions, bruises, falls, broken bones, electrical shocks, biting insects, and infectious blood pathogens.
