Compensation: The starting hourly wage is $34.66, with progressive increases as outlined in the union agreement.
This position is represented by a union and includes a probationary period of six months.
Initial training will take place in a designated training facility for approximately five weeks. Successful completion of this training is essential to transition into the field training phase. This includes passing both a written and practical pole climbing assessment, as well as executing a timed pole top rescue.
Position Overview: The Line Helper role is an entry-level opportunity where individuals will gain hands-on experience in the construction, operation, and maintenance of overhead electric systems. The position involves acquiring the necessary skills and knowledge to advance through the established Line Helper progression. Responsibilities include performing tasks at the apprentice line worker level, engaging in distribution and/or transmission work, and being available for emergency and overtime assignments as needed. Candidates must demonstrate safe working practices, possess mechanical aptitude for using hand and power tools, and be capable of climbing and working on poles, ladders, and other elevated structures.
Qualifications:
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required; additional electrical technical training is preferred.
- Candidates must successfully complete the EEI Construction and Skilled Trades Test (CAST), an agility assessment, and a knowledge-based examination. An interview will also be conducted.
- Ability to work extended hours, weekends, and respond to emergency situations is essential.
- Successful candidates must reside within a reasonable commuting distance from the reporting location.
Experience: A minimum of two years of electrical, physical labor, or related mechanical experience is preferred. Graduates from a line school training program or Eversource Lineworker program may be considered with less experience. Prior experience with pole climbing is advantageous. A work history that reflects safe work habits is required.
Licenses & Certifications: A valid driver's license with a clean driving record is mandatory. Candidates should ideally possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or have the ability to obtain one within six months of employment.
Working Conditions: This role involves performing strenuous physical tasks both indoors and outdoors, in various weather conditions, and may require extended periods of activity.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand for five to six hours, potentially in elevated positions.
- Ability to sit for two to three hours, which may include driving or working in confined spaces.
- Frequent movement to unload and install equipment.
- Capability to lift and push/pull weights up to 75 pounds.
- Ability to climb or utilize equipment to reach various heights.
- Frequent bending, stooping, and squatting.
- Color differentiation is necessary.
Skills and Knowledge: Candidates should be able to:
- Understand methods, materials, and tools used in line construction and maintenance.
- Apply principles of electrical theory to circuits and wiring systems.
- Recognize occupational hazards and implement necessary safety precautions.
- Operate light construction and maintenance equipment.
Additionally, candidates must be able to follow oral and written instructions, interpret data and documents, analyze and solve problems, and learn new skills while managing deadlines and interruptions.
