Job Summary

NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan is a community hospital that provides culturally-sensitive care in a welcoming and hospitable setting. As a Dietitian II, you will be responsible for nutrition assessments, education, counseling, and breastfeeding classes for WIC participants.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct participant-centered nutrition assessments, education, and counseling for WIC participants from different age groups.
  • Assist in planning and implementing the Language Access and Nutrition Education component of the WIC Program.
  • Act as a member of the Interdisciplinary Team and participate in Performance Improvement activities.
  • Plan and conduct group and individual nutrition education and breastfeeding classes for WIC participants.
  • Assist in planning and implementing the program's goals of ensuring language access to all WIC participants and providing participant-centered nutrition education.
  • Perform complete nutrition assessments using participant-centered techniques and ensure that all nutritional risk criteria are accurately identified, interpreted, and entered in the WIC computer system.
  • Demonstrate participant-centered skills in all interactions with WIC participants, including critical thinking, motivational interviewing, and rapport-building.
  • Certify eligible WIC applicants using the WIC computer system according to NYSDOH regulations.
  • Conduct on-site anthropometry and hematology as needed.
  • Prepare High Risk care plans for High Risk participants and provide appropriate follow-up care/nutrition counseling.
  • Refer participants to other health professionals or agencies as needed.
  • Document in the WIC computer system the nutrition education provided and any referrals made.
  • Prescribe, tailor, and issue food packages to certified participants as defined by NYSDOH.
  • Review and approve formula requests requiring medical documentation for participants, in consultation with the healthcare provider as needed.
  • Conduct self-evaluations and peer reviews of QNs/CPAs as assigned.
  • Complete Outbound and Inbound Verification of Certification (VOC).
  • Schedule WIC participants for subsequent certification, for secondary and follow-up nutrition education contacts as required.
  • Plan, organize, coordinate, and implement special events/nutrition promotional activities.
  • Demonstrate a professional manner, warmth, and respect of participants, to enhance and further the Hospital's Mission/Vision and Values.
  • Attend staff education as required by the Hospital and NYS DOH.
  • Participate in outreach activities, performance improvement activities, or other special projects as assigned.
  • Perform other functions and/or special assignments as the need arises.
  • Adhere to Hospital and Departmental Policies and Procedures.
Requirements
  • Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university, with a major in Dietetics or Foods and Nutrition in a program approved by the American Dietetic Association (ADA); or,
  • Registration or eligibility for registration by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) as a Registered Dietitian or New York State Certification as a Dietitian-Nutritionist.
