Position Overview:

The Language Justice Specialist (LJS) will collaborate with the Deputy Director and Language Justice Coordinator to enhance language justice initiatives within the City of Somerville. This role is pivotal in the execution of the comprehensive 5-year Language Access Plan, aimed at fostering inclusivity and accessibility for all residents.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Training and Development: Lead workshops and training sessions to promote understanding of language justice principles, ensuring city staff are equipped with the necessary skills to provide effective language access services.
  • Service Management: Oversee the daily operations of language access services, managing requests for interpretation and translation, and ensuring compliance with established standards.
  • Resource Creation: Develop and distribute educational materials and resources that support language access efforts, catering to both internal staff and the public.

Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as public policy, sociology, or social justice.
  • At least two years of experience in language access, community engagement, or related fields.
  • Strong communication skills and a commitment to equity and inclusion.

This position requires a proactive approach to problem-solving and a dedication to serving diverse communities through effective language access strategies.
