Infection Prevention Specialist

Job Summary:
We are seeking a highly skilled Infection Preventionist to join our team at Lifespan. The successful candidate will be responsible for investigating nosocomial infections using advanced surveillance techniques, developing and implementing policies and procedures related to epidemiology, infection control, and infectious diseases.
Key Responsibilities:
- Investigate outbreaks of infection in conjunction with the department, establishing etiology, developing interventions, and evaluating outcomes.
- Obtain specimens from patients, hospital personnel, and environmental reservoirs to determine the source of infection during outbreaks.
- Use molecular biological techniques to type bacteria and determine similarities of isolates.
- Monitor endemic hospital-acquired infections or potential sources of infection following procedural changes using surveillance cultures.
- Carry out investigations to determine the risk of infection from medical devices.
- Coordinate and perform safety and surveillance rounds throughout the hospital in collaboration with safety and facilities management personnel.
- Integrate monitoring of infection control practices and standard precautions into rounds.
- Serve as a consultant and educator to healthcare team members, developing and presenting in-service education programs regarding infection control for all areas of the hospital.
- Compile and analyze infection control data and create related reports for end users.
- Compile and analyze data from research studies to identify risk factors and etiologies associated with specific infections.
- Utilize local area computer network for the Epidemiology and Infection Control Department.
- Participate in the development or updating of computer programs to enhance the productivity of the Epidemiology and Infection Control Department.
- Perform surveillance activities as designated on an assigned basis.
- Carry out delegated responsibilities in the absence of the Director and/or Medical Director of Epidemiology and Infection Control Department.
- Review, revise, and update policies and procedures related to infection control practice.
- Represent the Epidemiology and Infection Control Department on assigned committees and/or Task Forces.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's Degree in medical technology, nursing, or a related field.
- Evidence of graduate-level courses in microbiology or epidemiology is preferred.
- Certification as an Infection Control Professional or meeting eligibility requirements for such certification.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the care provided in a tertiary acute-care hospital to patients throughout the continuum of life, with consideration of aging processes, human development stages, and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.
- Demonstrated skills with personal computers and software, including database management, spreadsheets, word processing, and graphics applications.
- Demonstrated skill with both verbal and written communication.
- Three years of experience in hospital epidemiology/infection control.
