Aviation Equipment Technician

General Overview:
Under the overall guidance of the Director of Maintenance and the Maintenance Supervisor, the Aviation Equipment Technician is responsible for proficient repair and upkeep of gasoline and diesel-powered machinery, including heavy construction apparatus, firefighting units, and snow removal vehicles, along with any non-powered attachments.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conducts inspections, diagnoses issues, and repairs mechanical faults in gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and machinery.
- Executes comprehensive overhauls.
- Performs routine maintenance and mechanical repairs on passenger boarding bridges.
- Engages in welding and fabrication tasks.
- Maintains and repairs pumps, lighting systems, steering mechanisms, starters, generators, universal joints, and hydraulic systems.
- Adjusts, repairs, and/or replaces braking systems.
- Keeps detailed records of repairs conducted; orders necessary parts; performs emergency repairs in the field.
- Ensures workspaces and equipment are maintained in a clean, safe, and organized manner.
- Handles snow removal duties as assigned.
- Available for emergency call-ins.
- Completes additional tasks and responsibilities as directed.
Qualifications:
- Possession of a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License with passenger endorsement and maintenance of appropriate driving privileges.
- Ability to traverse uneven surfaces and rough terrain while demonstrating safe work and driving practices.
- Proven experience operating skid steer loaders, front-end loaders, backhoes, and dump trucks.
- Capability to access and operate all types of equipment and vehicles.
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational and analytical skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team setting as well as independently, exercising sound judgment.
Work Ethic:
Must occasionally work extended hours and be subject to emergency callbacks.
- Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office is required. Utilization of personal computers and/or PDAs for work order systems, email, and training is expected.
- Effective communication skills over two-way radios, email, phone, and in-person interactions are essential.
- Ability to comprehend and interpret instructions, short correspondence, and memos, and ask clarifying questions to ensure understanding.
- Ability to follow general instructions in standard situations and solve problems effectively.
- May work in adverse weather conditions and must navigate all areas of work assignments.
- Must pass a criminal history background check and maintain eligibility for a security access badge in accordance with the Airport Security Plan.
Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma or GED with completion of a technical program in vehicle or general mechanics.
- A minimum of 3 years' experience in the maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and machinery.
- ASE certification is required or must be obtained within two (2) years of hire.
The Aviation Equipment Technician will collaborate with a team to maintain all airport-owned vehicles and heavy machinery, ensuring the safety and comfort of airport personnel, tenants, visitors, and the traveling public.
Physical and Environmental Requirements:
This role is primarily performed in a garage/shop environment but may require outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
Additional physical requirements include exposure to noise, vibrations, chemicals, and other contaminants, as well as moving mechanical hazards and extreme temperatures.
Must possess sufficient visual acuity, with or without corrective lenses; adequate auditory ability, with or without assistive devices; capable of tolerating exposure to noise levels up to 120 decibels; and able to remain on one's feet for extended periods.
Additional physical demands include stooping, standing, walking, lifting, pushing, climbing stairs/ladders, and the ability to lift/carry 50 lbs. unassisted. Must be able to distinguish colors as necessary for operational signals.
