Phlebotomy Technician

As a Phlebotomist - Laboratory (PRN) at Uvalde Memorial Hospital, you will be responsible for performing lab draws on patients of all ages, from newborns to geriatric patients, in various areas of the hospital, including inpatient, outpatient laboratory, emergency room, and trauma. This non-exempt position requires minimal supervision and involves working independently to prioritize STAT orders, ASAP orders, scheduled orders, and outpatients.
Essential Functions- Perform specialty blood draws on patients as needed, including blood gases, blood culture collections, etc.
- Receive phlebotomy specimens in the Meditech system per policy.
- Document draws in the medical record accurately and timely.
- Label and record all test tubes, log procedures, and file paperwork appropriately.
- Separate and dispose of all sharps in the appropriate waste container.
- Maintain inventory and order supplies when needed.
- Prioritize STAT orders, ASAP orders, scheduled orders, and outpatients.
- Assist laboratory technicians and perform clerical work when needed.
- Review patient requisitions to verify information is correct, correct tests ordered, and no missed tests.
- Scan daily patient requisitions as needed.
- Receive and order lab tests, ensuring correct information is used and labels test tubes accordingly.
- Maintain phlebotomy inventory counts as needed or requested from management.
- Ensure phlebotomy tray/carts are fully stocked and surrounding areas are maintained, clean, and clutter-free.
- Maintain the collection batch/outstanding specimen report for inpatient/outpatient draws for accuracy.
- Perform PKUs on infants and be responsible for complete processing and documentation, including sending out to the Department of State Health Services.
- Ensure results for outpatient tests are sent to the correct location.
- Assist night technologists as indicated per shift.
- Minimum Education: High School diploma or GED required.
- A certification in phlebotomy, Certified Patient Care Technician, Certified Medical Assistant, or Clinical Lab Assistant is highly preferred.
- Completion of a Phlebotomy program is required, including a minimum of 80 hours of training in the proper procedure for venipuncture and skin punctures.
- Current BLS for healthcare provider certification is required.
The job requires sitting, standing, walking, kneeling, bending, squatting, and reaching. It also requires good finger dexterity, repetitive motions with hands and fingers, and good vision and hearing. Pushing and pulling equipment may be necessary, and medium lifting is required on an occasional basis.
