JOB SUMMARY

Performs lab draws on patients of all ages, ranging from newborns to geriatric in all areas of the hospital, including inpatient, outpatient laboratory, emergency room and trauma. Reports to Laboratory Manager. Non-Exempt position.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Performs specialty blood draws on patients as needed, including blood gases, blood culture collections, etc.

Receives phlebotomy specimens in Meditech system per policy.

Performs lab draws, including both venipuncture and skin puncture.

Documents draws in medical record accurately and timely.

Labels and records all test tubes, logs procedures, files paperwork appropriately.

Separates and disposes all sharps in appropriate waste container.

Maintain inventory. Orders supplies when needed.

Requires minimal supervision in performance of job duties.

Prioritize STAT orders, ASAP orders, scheduled orders and outpatients.

Assists laboratory technician and performs clerical work when needed.

Reviews patient requisitions to verify information is correct, correct tests ordered, no missed tests, etc.

Scans daily patient requisitions as needed.

Receives and orders lab tests, ensures correct information is used and labels test tubes accordingly.

Maintains phlebotomy inventory counts as needed or requested from management, and ensures phlebotomy tray/carts are fully stocked and surrounding areas are maintained, clean and clutter free, including the phlebotomy drawing room, outpatient waiting area, and processing area.

Maintains the collection batch/outstanding specimen report for inpatient/outpatient draws for accuracy.

Performs PKUs on infants, and responsible for complete processing and documentation, including sending out to Dept of State Health Services.

Responsible for ensuring results for outpatient tests are sent to correct location.

Assists night technologists as indicated per shift.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Education

High School diploma or GED required.

A certification in phlebotomy, Certified Patient Care Technician, Certified Medical Assistant, or Clinical Lab Assistant highly preferred.

Completion of Phlebotomy program Required, including the completion of a minimum of eighty hours of training in the proper procedure to be employed in the performance of venipuncture and skin punctures as evidenced by proof of rotation schedule.

If certification not obtained prior to hire, one of the above (CMA, CLA, PCT, or Phlebotomy Technician certification (AMT, ASPT or equivalent)) must be obtained within one year from the date of hire.

Current BLS for healthcare provider certification required.

Required Skills

Must possess superior ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing. Additional languages preferred.

Excellent interpersonal skills and customer service.

Must possess high degree of organization and be able to multi-task efficiently and effectively.

Intermediate computer knowledge required, including Microsoft Office and Outlook.

FUNCTIONAL DEMANDS

Functional Job Requirements:

Job requirements include, but are not limited to: sitting, standing, walking, kneeling, bending, squatting and reaching. Requires good finger dexterity, repetitive motions with hands and fingers. Requires ability to have good vision and hearing. Pushing and pulling equipment may be necessary.

Job requires medium lifting on an occasional basis.
