Kokosing, a leading general contractor, is seeking a skilled Deckhand/Skilled Laborer II to join our marine construction team in the Baltimore, MD and Norfolk, VA areas.

Job Summary:

We are looking for a highly motivated and experienced individual to work onboard watercraft, such as barges, crew boats, push boats, and tug boats. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing various duties, including handling lines, sweeping and washing decks, and assisting with maintenance tasks.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Handle lines to moor vessels, tie up vessels to another vessel, or rig towing lines
  • Communicate via radio with Captain or Foreman, giving distance and aids to navigation, spotting obstructions and other vessels
  • Sweep and wash decks to remove dirt, oil, and debris, and perform general housekeeping duties
  • Stand steering watches or lookout watches while underway, and move controls or turn handwheels to tighten/loosen push cables
  • Load or unload material from vessels, chip and clean rust spots on decks, hull, and superstructure, and prime and paint these areas
  • Lubricate machinery and equipment, and assist with performing maintenance of the vessel, including caring for tools and equipment
  • Splice and repair cables and ropes, and examine cables that hold vessels in tow and tighten cables to ensure vessels are snug
Requirements:
  • Ability to follow directions
  • Handle lines to moor vessels
  • Handle basic hand tools, such as hammer, wrench, bar, ax, razor knife, etc.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Merchant Marine and Able-Bodied Seaman credentials
Work Environment:

The work environment is on barges, boats, and floating equipment, and accessing the work site may require climbing from barges, boats, and floating equipment when they are at different levels above the water.

The employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions, and is occasionally exposed to high precarious places.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands of this job include standing, walking, using hands to finger, handle, or feel, reaching with hands and arms, and talking or hearing.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
