Nuclear Power Plant Operator

The US Navy is seeking highly skilled and motivated individuals to join our team as Nuclear Reactor Mechanics. As a key member of our nuclear propulsion team, you will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of our nuclear reactors.
Key Responsibilities- Operate and maintain steam turbines and reduction gears used for nuclear ship propulsion and auxiliary machinery such as turbogenerators, pumps, and oil purifiers.
- Maintain auxiliary machinery outside of main machinery spaces, including electrohydraulic steering engines and elevators, refrigeration plants, air conditioning systems, and desalinization plants.
- Operate and maintain compressed gas producing plants.
- Perform duties in nuclear propulsion plants operating reactor control, propulsion, and power generation systems.
As a Nuclear Reactor Mechanic, you will have the opportunity to work in a fast-paced and dynamic environment, both at sea and ashore. You may be assigned to a nuclear-powered submarine or aircraft carrier, where you will be responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient operation of our nuclear reactors.
Training and AdvancementUpon completion of initial training, you will attend A School in Charleston, SC, where you will develop a working knowledge of technical mathematics and power distribution. You will also learn to operate electrical equipment using controllers and how to properly test, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair electrical circuits, motors, and other related electrical equipment.
Following A School, you will attend Naval Nuclear Power School (NNPS), where you will learn theory and practical application of nuclear physics and reactor engineering. You will gain a comprehensive understanding of a pressurized-water Naval nuclear power plant, including reactor core nuclear principles, heat transfer, and fluid systems, plant chemistry and materials, mechanical and electrical systems, and radiological control.
After completing NNPS, you will begin prototype training in your rating specialty at one of two Nuclear Power Training Units (NPTUs). This six-month course will teach you the fundamentals of a Naval nuclear power plant and the interrelationship of its mechanical, electrical, and reactor subsystems.
Qualifications and RequirementsTo be eligible for this role, you must be a U.S. citizen with a high school diploma or equivalent. You must also have completed one year of Algebra and meet eligibility requirements for a security clearance.
