Job Summary

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Probation Officer to join our team. As a Probation Officer, you will play a critical role in ensuring public safety and supporting the rehabilitation of individuals on probation.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise a specialized caseload of high-risk inmates and probationers, conducting regular home and community contacts to monitor progress and provide guidance.
  • Conduct thorough investigations, gather information, and prepare reports to inform sentencing recommendations and treatment plans.
  • Collaborate with probationers, district, and community resources to develop and manage individualized treatment plans, promoting evidence-based practices and rehabilitation.
  • Provide coaching and mentoring to line probation officers, covering vacancies, providing training, and reviewing presentence reports.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with community agencies, stakeholders, and other partners to ensure effective case management and support.
Requirements
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Experience working directly with diverse groups of inmates or probationers, co-workers, and community agencies in a criminal justice and/or human services setting.
  • Experience providing high-volume case management/supervision, counseling, and documenting case activities on an ongoing basis in a fast-paced criminal justice and/or human services setting.
  • Experience gathering information, creating, reviewing, and presenting reports to official or administrative entities.
  • Experience with direct delivery of human services, including experience related to probation and parole practices.
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced knowledge in Rehabilitation Counseling, Psychology, Sociology/Social Work, Criminal Justice, or a related human services field or equivalent applicable training or experience.
  • Awareness of Evidence-Based Practices and Reentry initiatives.
  • Experience with planning and directing projects and training others.
