Vast is in search of a Human Systems Equipment Specialist, who will report to the Principal Engineer of Human Systems. This role involves supporting the selection, development, preparation, stowage, and inventory management of the essential equipment for our artificial-gravity human-rated space stations. This is a full-time, exempt position.

As a Human Systems Equipment Specialist, you will play a crucial role in provisioning the environment for human interaction within our space station. You will collaborate with various teams, including Medical, Food, Structures, Thermal, ECLSS, Test, Integration, and Manufacturing, to ensure the design and construction of high-quality human habitats.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, select, enhance, qualify, manufacture, and validate inflight equipment and accommodations for crewed missions in low Earth orbit.
  • Develop comprehensive documentation for all crew-provisioned items, including establishing a governing database and catalog of all crew equipment.
  • Assist in creating an inventory management system to monitor the usage and stowage of both bulk and individual equipment.
  • Collaborate closely with Medical and Food teams to ensure proper packaging and stowage of medical equipment and food supplies.
  • Work with fabricators and structural engineers to design and test transport bags for cargo.
  • Evaluate crew non-edible consumable provisioning needs and logistics for mission duration onboard the space station.
  • Gather requirements, analyze trade-offs, and define detailed specifications for all equipment and accommodations.
  • Support internal and external design reviews with suppliers and stakeholders.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • At least 1 year of experience in designing for human systems or related engineering projects (including internships and hands-on academic projects).
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
Preferred Skills & Experience:
  • Experience in developing space flight hardware.
  • Familiarity with safety equipment outside the space sector.
  • Experience collaborating with vendors for soft goods.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal oversight.
  • Proven track record of taking ownership of projects and delivering results.
  • Experience in product design and packaging.
Additional Requirements:
  • Exceptional communication skills across all formats (verbal, written, and interpersonal).
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally.
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends to meet critical mission milestones.
  • Capability to lift up to 25 lbs unassisted.
