Position Title: Automated Traffic Systems Technician / Vision Zero
Key Responsibilities
This role involves skilled electronic and electrical work at a journeyman level, focusing on the construction, installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of various traffic-related equipment. This includes electronic signage, traffic signals, incident management cameras, and communication infrastructures such as copper and fiber optic systems, as well as street lighting.
Additional tasks may be assigned as necessary, including occasional electrical work in municipal facilities or infrastructure as directed.
The primary responsibility of this position is to maintain devices and systems under the City's Automated Enforcement program, which includes traffic signals, cameras, and communication devices.
Work Environment
Work is conducted in accordance with established standards and practices of OSHA, NESC, and IMSA, under the supervision of the Traffic Signal Superintendent.
Typical Duties Include:
- Engaging in the installation, maintenance, and repair of street lighting and traffic signal equipment, particularly components of the Automated Enforcement Program.
- Conducting maintenance on traffic signal controllers and cabinets.
- Troubleshooting wiring issues in cabinets as well as overhead and underground systems.
- Installing, diagnosing, and repairing wiring issues in the street, including replacing conductors in conduit and testing loop detectors.
- Performing on-site repairs, including minor conduit repairs.
- Coordinating with vendors and suppliers regarding the installation, maintenance, and repair of Automated Enforcement Devices.
- Monitoring computer systems for troubleshooting field issues and making necessary adjustments.
- Preparing daily reports and maintaining required documentation.
- Keeping logs and records for Automated Enforcement Devices as mandated by relevant statutes and ordinances.
- Attending hearings or court proceedings as necessary.
- Preparing and installing traffic signal and street lighting equipment under direct supervision.
- Responding to emergency calls for urgent repairs to traffic signals and street lighting equipment.
- Performing related duties as required.
Qualifications
Applicants should have a high school diploma or equivalent, along with a minimum of four years of experience and training leading to an unlimited electrical journeyperson's license (E2) or a limited electrical line journeyperson's license (L2). Possession of International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Field Level 1 certification is preferred but not mandatory.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Understanding of electrical and electronic principles.
- Awareness of safe work practices and occupational hazards in the electrical field.
- Ability to read and interpret schematics and traffic signal plans.
- Proficiency in troubleshooting and resolving traffic signal-related issues.
- Skilled in using relevant tools and equipment.
- Competence in basic construction tasks and manual labor.
- Ability to apply independent judgment and resourcefulness in the operation of automated enforcement devices.
- Proficiency in operating computers and related software.
- Effective communication skills with diverse individuals.
- Ability to prepare and maintain various work-related records and reports as required by law.
- Willingness to obtain necessary training and certifications as mandated.
Special Requirements
- At the time of application, candidates must possess a valid State of CT Unlimited Electrical Journeyperson License (E2) or a valid Limited Electrical Line Journeyperson's License (L2). If licensed in another state, candidates must obtain a CT license within one year of hire.
- Must hold a valid State of Connecticut driver's license and maintain it throughout employment.
- Must achieve Work Zone Safety certification within one year of hire.
