Traffic Safety Engineer

We are seeking a highly skilled Traffic Safety Engineer to join our team at the City of New Haven, CT. As a key member of our transportation planning team, you will play a critical role in developing and implementing traffic safety improvements under the City's Vision Zero program.
Key Responsibilities- Design and coordinate traffic safety improvements to align with the goals of the City's Vision Zero program and Automated Enforcement Program.
- Prepare traffic projections and geometric plans for roadways and related traffic control devices.
- Compile statistics and data to identify high traffic crash locations and prepare recommendations for traffic safety programs.
- Prepare reports for the City's traffic safety programs and Automated Enforcement Program.
- Conduct specialized surveys to gather critical data for traffic engineering and transportation planning analysis.
- Coordinate with other City Departments for the efficient and effective operation of the City's traffic safety and Automated Enforcement programs.
- Train and supervise assigned personnel.
- Provide support to senior staff for public meetings related to traffic projects and updates on planned improvements.
- Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in civil engineering, traffic engineering, or a closely related field.
- 3 to 5 years of engineering experience, including 1 to 3 years of traffic engineering and transportation planning experience.
- Connecticut Professional Engineering (P.E.) License or Registration by the date of hiring.
- Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of traffic engineering and transportation planning.
- Thorough knowledge of traffic safety practices.
- Thorough knowledge of traffic signal systems.
- Ability to prepare complete plans, estimates, and specifications for major traffic engineering improvements.
- Ability to prepare and make presentations to a variety of stakeholders.
- Ability to supervise personnel.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, City Departments, and with the public.
This is a General Fund, 'Tested' position. This position is included in a collective bargaining agreement with Local 3144, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees. Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a pre-employment background check, a pre-employment physical examination, including pre-employment drug screening, and a 90-day probationary period.
