Job Summary:

The Pharmacy Technician Specialist will work in a specialized area of the pharmacy, utilizing advanced skills and knowledge to perform complex pharmaceutical processes. This role requires expertise in equipment and technology, as well as problem-solving skills to ensure accurate and timely completion of documents and records.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform specialized services and functions in assigned areas, utilizing advanced skills and knowledge beyond those required in routine pharmacy technician roles.
  • Work primarily in atypical environments, such as remote medication histories.
  • Serve as an expert in equipment and technology, problem-solving technical issues as they arise.
  • Ensure accurate and timely completion of documents and records.
  • Identify quality improvement opportunities based on specialized skill set, ensuring safe, effective, and efficient services and patient care.
  • Provide input to and support implementation of operational changes, advancements, and site and system standardization.
  • Participate in site or system specialized work teams, committees, and councils.
  • Comply with legal, regulatory, and accreditation standards, keeping current with changes in the specialized field.
  • Collaborate with department leadership to adopt best practices, holding others accountable to best practices in the specialized area.
  • Serve as a resource in the specialized area for other pharmacy team members, physicians, nurses, and ancillary departments.
  • Problem-solve complex problems, ensuring issues are escalated and closed as needed.
  • Collaborate with department leaders to develop and coordinate team member education, training, orientation, and competency.
  • Train other team members in specialized areas.
  • Serve as the department liaison to system pharmacy teams in specialty areas, collaborating with leadership to communicate changes in specialty areas.

Requirements:

  • Pharmacy Technician certification (CPhT) issued by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board, or Pharmacy Technician Certified (CPhT) issued by the National Healthcare Association.
  • Licensure in the state for which they provide medication history services.
  • High School Graduate.
  • Typically requires 5 years of experience in hospital or retail pharmacy technician role, depending on specialty area.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Good mathematics skills.
  • Attention to details.
  • Good communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills.
  • Exceptional customer service, problem resolution, and process development skills.
  • Basic computer skills.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to walk, lift, squat, bend, twist, crawl, kneel, climb, and reach above shoulders throughout the work day.
  • Ability to lift up to 35 lbs from floor to chest level; lift and carry up to 35 lbs at waist height a reasonable distance; push/pull with 30 lbs of force.
