Job Summary

This is a challenging and rewarding opportunity for a highly skilled Chemical Engineer to join our team at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. As a Scientist/Engineer 3, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and operating processes or unit operations to create a diverse range of products.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and develop chemical processes and unit operations to create new products.
  • Evaluate and manipulate the chemical properties of various substances used in product fabrication.
  • Design, model, evaluate, and implement chemical processes, instrumentation, and equipment to ensure effectiveness.
  • Perform trials, tests, and/or experiments to support engineering, production, and/or R&D activities.
  • Apply principles of chemistry, nuclear science, biology, physics, material science, math, and engineering to solve problems involving production, use, or conversion of chemicals, materials, and energy.
  • Use principles of biology and engineering tools to mimic biological systems to create products or modify and control biological systems to replace, augment, sustain, or control chemical and mechanical processes.
Qualifications
  • BS/BA and 5+ years of relevant work experience -OR-
  • MS/MA and 3+ years of relevant work experience -OR-
  • PhD with 1+ year of relevant experience
Preferred Qualifications
  • PhD in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, nuclear engineering, chemistry, or related field plus 3 years of related work or educational experience; or, Masters in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, nuclear engineering, chemistry, or related field plus 5 years of related work or educational experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in plant systems design and/or systems engineering in a plant operating environment.
  • Demonstrated experience with air pollution control systems and continuous emissions monitors.
  • Knowledge of NQA-1 Quality Assurance requirements and a demonstrated ability to apply quality assurance principles to test planning, execution, and documentation of testing and analysis activities.
  • Member in a professional society/community.
Working Conditions
  • Potential exposure to hazardous chemicals; potential exposure to controlled levels of ionizing radiation.
  • Experimental work involves exposure to radiological materials and environment and typical laboratory chemicals and equipment that are appropriately assessed and managed to prevent exposing staff to hazards.
  • Would need to become a Radiological Worker I or II to be able to support radioactive materials testing in radioactive designated areas.
Testing Designated Position

This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP). The candidate selected for this position will be subject to pre-employment and random drug testing for illegal drugs, including marijuana, consistent with the Controlled Substances Act and the PNNL Workplace Substance Abuse Program.
