Position Overview:

Prince William County's Department of Development Services is seeking an innovative and dedicated professional for the role of Principal Engineer - Structural. This position is designed for individuals who are eager to take initiative and tackle engineering challenges.

The Department of Development Services emphasizes collaboration between staff and clients to facilitate effective development processes while ensuring adherence to building regulations. We are in search of customer-focused professionals for our Building Construction Review Branch to deliver exceptional service while fulfilling their critical role as "first preventers." About This Role:

This position involves leading a successful team, developing innovative solutions to ensure building safety, addressing complex technical and procedural challenges, and providing outstanding customer service. Responsibilities include:
  • Conducting thorough commercial and residential plan reviews for new construction and alterations.
  • Performing structural investigations as necessary.
  • Responding to inquiries from citizens, contractors, builders, and designers.
  • Participating in Process Action Teams to enhance operational efficiency.
Minimum Qualifications:

A Bachelor's degree in Engineering along with 3 years of relevant experience in commercial/residential structural engineering and/or structural plan review.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Proficiency in reading and reviewing building plans for compliance with applicable codes.
  • Experience assisting designers and contractors in resolving technical issues.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to maintain effective relationships with various stakeholders.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
Work Schedule:

This position operates Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., totaling a 37.5-hour work week. Telework options are available but may change based on business needs.

Special Requirements:

Candidates must obtain certification as a Building Plan Reviewer within 18 months of employment and achieve certification as a Residential Plan Reviewer and Commercial Building Inspector within 36 months. Registration as a design professional (P.E.) is required or must be obtained within 6 months of employment.
