Position Overview:

Type:
Full-time role. Typical working hours are from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm. Flexibility in scheduling is anticipated due to the dynamic nature of a start-up environment. Candidates should be prepared to work evenings and occasional weekends as necessary, with schedules adjusted to accommodate after-hours responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities:


As a vital member of the School Leadership Team, the Counselor reports to the Director of Operations and plays a crucial role in maintaining high standards of organizational, operational, and customer service excellence, allowing instructional leaders and staff to concentrate on achieving strong student outcomes.

School Operations Leadership


Collaborate with the Assistant Principal - Culture to establish and execute core practices and policies aimed at enhancing collective well-being, community development, and building trusting relationships, along with training in emotional intelligence (EI) and executive function (EF).

Counseling Services

Design, implement, and assess a comprehensive and proactive guidance and counseling program.

Provide individual and small group counseling in a proactive manner.

Deliver classroom lessons that adhere to the standards set by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA).


Facilitate a guidance curriculum that encourages community and relationship building, fosters self-regulation skills, and covers well-being topics such as social and emotional learning, healthy living, mindfulness, stress management, and self-care.

Collaborate with administration, staff, families, and community organizations to secure resources for students.

Utilize an effective referral process to assist students and others in accessing special programs and services.

Student Leadership and Governance


Work alongside the Assistant Principal - Culture to create and implement student-led and/or student-facilitated initiatives such as peer support, mediation, tutoring, and student governance groups.

Oversee the democratic selection, ongoing training, and support for these groups.


Ensure students receive guidance and support, set goals, monitor progress, and engage in problem-solving.

Instructional Leadership


Participate in academic committee meetings as necessary to ensure appropriate placement and development of individual education plans for students in accordance with established policies and procedures.

Communications

Maintain confidentiality regarding students and their families unless there is a legitimate need to know or a safety concern.

Foster two-way communication with the principal, staff, students, parents, and the community.

Consult with parents, teachers, administrators, and other relevant parties to enhance their interactions with students.

Risk Management and Compliance


Adhere to policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education regulations, and board policy in the guidance and counseling domain.

Develop and coordinate ongoing evaluations of the guidance program and implement changes based on findings.

Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:


The ideal candidate for the School Counselor position must demonstrate a strong commitment to the mission of the Academy of Visual and Performing Arts and a willingness to exceed expectations to meet the needs of students, families, and staff.

Additionally, candidates should possess a combination of the following qualifications:

- Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree in Guidance & Counseling preferred
- Three (3) years of teaching experience; experience in a school counseling setting preferred
- Valid Texas counseling certificate
- Strong project and time management skills; ability to effectively plan, manage multiple priorities with attention to detail, and deliver consistent results
- Ability to lead, influence, and hold others accountable to high standards of operational excellence
- Strong learning orientation and a desire to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
- Successful completion of a criminal background check required

The salary for this position ranges from $65,000 to $70,000 annually. We are dedicated to maintaining internal pay equity throughout our organization, and as such, we do not negotiate salary offers outside of our established salary bands. We provide a comprehensive benefits package that includes extensive health benefits.
