Job Title: Senior Patent Agent

A prominent life science company in Palo Alto, CA is seeking a Senior Patent Agent to join their team. This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to work for a company that holds a leadership position in the global biotechnology market. This position is 100% remote-based.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with outside counsel to provide guidance on patent application preparation and prosecution, ensuring alignment with company products and strategy.
  • Work closely with R&D to assess patentability, draft and review invention disclosures, and prepare provisional patent applications.
  • Review and prepare freedom-to-operate opinions on third-party IP with outside counsel, including proactive reviews as needed.
  • Oversee product assignment for licensing and royalty reporting, and guide senior management in evaluating IP-related licensing and business transactions.
  • Develop strategies for the company's patent portfolio, stay updated on relevant IP laws and regulations, propose and manage IP expenditure budgets, and potentially supervise others.
Requirements:
  • A Ph.D. in a life-science discipline is required; molecular biology and NGS experience is preferred.
  • Must be a USPTO registered Patent Agent.
  • 6+ years of experience preparing and prosecuting patent applications.
  • Develop strategies for internal IP by analyzing external IP and understanding the company's market technology position.
  • Prepare, file, and prosecute both domestic and foreign patent applications.
  • Demonstrate strong advocacy in patent prosecution, with the ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize tasks, and meet tight deadlines.
  • Exhibit excellent communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with proficiency in Microsoft Office and fluency in English, while being collaborative and self-motivated.
