Electrical Testing Technician for Circuit Breakers and Switchgear

Job Overview:

Under the supervision of the lead technician, engage in a range of intricate tasks to evaluate the electrical and mechanical properties of circuit breakers and switchgear, along with all associated components and assemblies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Execute a variety of routine and specialized electrical assessments on diverse types of circuit breakers, switchgear, and related parts.
  • Perform both qualitative and quantitative evaluations to ensure the reliability of product functions, identifying the root causes of any inconsistencies and operational failures.
  • Configure and utilize testing equipment and instruments such as ammeters, voltmeters, oscilloscopes, and ohmmeters.
  • Establish necessary connections, operate circuit breakers and switchgear, and employ both low and high voltage apparatus to assess resistance and dielectric properties.
  • Employ personal computers and/or automated systems for product evaluation and record maintenance.
  • Confirm the completeness, positioning, and proper operation of all testing instruments, meters, and other components.
  • Inspect equipment and validate correct electrical-mechanical clearances.
  • Conduct specialized tests under the guidance of engineering staff.
  • Perform final evaluations on standard line circuit breakers and test unique or infrequently encountered breakers in accordance with established protocols.
  • Interpret complex schematics, diagrams, specification sheets, performance charts, testing standards, and other procedural documents.
  • Assess the functionality of controls, relays, indicators, and other electrical features, making adjustments as required.
  • Verify and adjust calibration settings.
  • Identify and reject defective circuit breakers and switchgear, documenting any deficiencies. Prepare testing reports and maintain necessary records.
  • Diagnose faulty circuit breakers, switchgear, and related components to sub-assembly and/or root cause levels.
  • Collaborate with fellow testers and assembly personnel to ensure thorough execution of preliminary and standard tests.
  • Validate changes to procedures and provide explanations for new methodologies.
  • Construct and repair test boards while maintaining existing ones.
  • Escalate any ambiguous conditions to the supervisor.

Required Qualifications:

  • Associate's Degree in Electrical Engineering or Electronics, formal certification from a Technical Trade School, or equivalent experience.
