We are seeking a highly skilled Rail Transportation Specialist to join our team at Strategic Materials Inc. as a Logistics Manager - Rail Operations. This is a key leadership position that requires a strong background in rail logistics management, transportation network management, and data analysis.

Key Responsibilities
  • Railcar Network Management:
    • Manage railcar availability, movement, and scheduling to ensure timely and cost-effective deliveries.
    • Coordinate with third-party rail carriers, shippers, and maintenance providers to maintain efficient railcar operations.
    • Track, trace, and monitor railcar progress to ensure timely and accurate reporting of railcar locations and delivery statuses.
  • Strategy Development & Implementation:
    • Develop and implement strategies to optimize railcar fleet operations, improve asset utilization, and reduce operational costs.
    • Analyze rail transport trends, market conditions, and regulatory changes to forecast demand and capacity needs.
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align rail strategies with broader logistics and supply chain goals.
    • Drive continuous improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing service levels, efficiency, and reducing overall costs.
  • Data Analysis & Reporting:
    • Utilize Rail TMS and other systems to track key performance indicators (KPIs), such as dwell times, cycle times, and demurrage.
    • Analyze transportation data to identify bottlenecks, inefficiencies, and opportunities for improvement.
    • Create regular reports to provide insights into railcar performance, network capacity, cost trends, and service levels.
    • Develop predictive models for railcar utilization and routing optimization based on historical data.
  • Rail Transportation Management System (TMS):
    • Oversee the use and continuous improvement of Rail TMS to enhance rail logistics processes.
    • Ensure accurate data input and integrity within the TMS, enabling real-time decision-making and reporting.
    • Train and support team members in effectively utilizing TMS tools for managing railcar networks.
    • Collaborate with IT and external vendors to troubleshoot any technical issues with the Rail TMS.
  • Stakeholder Engagement:
    • Serve as the primary point of contact for all railcar-related activities, ensuring strong relationships with rail carriers, suppliers, and customers.
    • Collaborate with internal departments (e.g., plant ops, finance, procurement, sales) to align on transportation needs and expectations.
    • Negotiate rail service agreements and contracts, ensuring favorable terms that support the company's operational and financial goals.
    • Facilitate communication with regulatory bodies and ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations.
  • Communication & Leadership:
    • Communicate effectively with senior management, providing insights, reports, and recommendations for optimizing rail operations.
    • Lead, mentor, and manage a team of logistics coordinators, ensuring smooth communication and clear role definition.
    • Drive collaboration and communication across departments to ensure alignment of transportation goals with broader company objectives.
    • Present data-driven recommendations to stakeholders to influence decisions on network optimization and cost reductions.
Qualifications & Skills
  • Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Business Administration, or related field.
  • 7+ years of experience in rail logistics management or transportation network management.
  • Strong knowledge of rail operations, including experience with Rail TMS.
  • Excellent data analysis skills with proficiency in Excel, BI tools, and rail management software.
  • Proven experience in strategy development, cost optimization, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Effective communicator with the ability to present complex data in a clear and actionable manner.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills, with a focus on continuous improvement.
  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements and industry standards in rail transportation.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with large-scale railcar fleets and working with Class I and Class II railroads.
  • Experience in managing third-party logistics providers and rail contract negotiations.
