Position Overview

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Assistant I is responsible for delivering friendly, efficient, and high-quality customer service to students, faculty, staff, and community members. This role involves assisting individuals in locating library resources, shelving materials, managing study spaces, creating student IDs, and performing additional assigned tasks. The Assistant I circulates library materials and maintains patron records using library management systems, interprets and enforces library policies, and operates with minimal supervision.

KEY DUTIES:

  1. Open and close the library during designated hours, ensuring security of equipment and cash.
  2. Manage the circulation of library materials, including charging, discharging, and renewing items.
  3. Assist with the registration of library patrons and processing of ID cards.
  4. Handle incoming materials and manage hold requests efficiently.
  5. Collect and document fines and fees, maintaining accurate financial records.
  6. Provide information and assistance via phone and in-person, ensuring a well-organized circulation area.
  7. Support the preparation of displays and assist with inventory and special projects.
  8. Serve as the primary contact for library visitors, directing them to appropriate resources.
  9. Utilize library management software for circulation services and patron record maintenance.
  10. Enforce library policies and contribute to the development of procedural documentation.
  11. Secure the library at the end of shifts, ensuring all patrons have exited and equipment is properly shut down.
  12. Assist patrons with technology and equipment use, including computers and copiers.
  13. Participate in inventory and repair tasks, providing support for library programs as needed.
  14. Manage mail and supply distribution, maintaining the overall appearance of the library.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Dependable and responsible.
  • Familiarity with office practices and procedures.
  • Proficient in personal computers and standard office software.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal abilities.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Capacity to interpret policies and work independently or collaboratively.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Work is primarily sedentary, with some movement required.
  • Work is conducted in a climate-controlled environment with minimal safety hazards.
  • Availability to work during all business hours, including evenings and weekends.

REQUIRED EDUCATION:

  • High school diploma or GED.
Compensation

Hourly Pay Rate is $11.32.
