Job Overview

Position Summary:

The primary objective of the Fleet Safety Manager role is to collaborate with various operational leaders, including General Managers and Transportation Managers, to minimize the risk of accidents and injuries. This is achieved by implementing comprehensive fleet safety policies and procedures that comply with Federal, State, and local regulations. Reporting directly to the Director of Fleet Safety, this position plays a crucial role in partnership with Fleet Safety and Operations teams to provide essential training and support to site Fleet leadership and drivers, particularly following incidents. The role also involves monitoring key safety performance metrics and delivering constructive feedback to management.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate fleet safety issues and develop effective strategies to address them.
  • Train drivers on proper inspection protocols and assess their performance within the region.
  • Conduct on-road assessments and compliance checks to ensure adherence to legal and company standards.
  • Analyze driver performance metrics to identify areas for improvement and collaborate with management to enhance driver performance.
  • Assist in the creation of standard operating procedures for training and operational guidance.
  • Provide expert advice to transportation managers on coaching drivers exhibiting unsafe behaviors as identified through various monitoring systems.
  • Conduct thorough audits and communicate findings to management, working with plant leadership to implement corrective measures.
  • Facilitate training for transportation staff on self-audit practices aimed at enhancing performance.
  • Utilize safety management systems and technology to monitor critical driving behaviors and ensure documentation accuracy.
  • Engage with drivers and management to ensure comprehensive understanding of safety protocols and regulatory compliance.
  • Be available for on-call support during driver incidents, maintaining professionalism in all communications.
  • Generate and distribute various reports to management as needed.
  • Participate in safety committees and accident review boards.
  • Serve as a resource for safety and regulatory inquiries within the local fleet.
  • Support corporate compliance efforts with Federal, State, and local regulations as required.
  • Contribute to company-wide safety initiatives and processes.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in transportation, safety, or a related field is preferred.
  • 5 to 8 years of experience in DOT safety management within transportation or manufacturing sectors.
  • Proven track record in developing and executing fleet safety programs that effectively reduce accident rates.
  • Experience in a unionized environment is advantageous.
  • Strong ability to foster relationships with transportation management and influence positive outcomes.
  • Familiarity with event recorders, ELD systems, and safety management tools.
  • Competence in accident analysis or willingness to complete relevant training.
  • Capability to investigate accidents to identify root causes and propose preventive measures.
  • Ability to work at heights and lift up to 50 pounds.
  • A Class A CDL with tanker endorsement is a plus but not mandatory.
  • Experience in DOT enforcement is beneficial.
  • Ability to thrive under pressure and travel frequently (up to 50%).
  • Proficient in MS Office and capable of working in a networked environment.

Language Proficiency:

  • Ability to comprehend and interpret regulations and technical documents, and communicate effectively with various stakeholders.

Mathematical Skills:

  • Proficient in basic mathematical operations and able to interpret data effectively.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work in diverse environmental conditions.
