Job Summary

This position is for the Division Director, Division of Graduate Education (DGE) in the Directorate for STEM Education (EDU).

The successful candidate will possess an established record of significant achievement in research, administration, and increasing leadership responsibility in academe, industry or government. Additionally, the Division Director must be experienced and competent in technical, financial and administrative management.

The Division Director has managerial and oversight responsibilities for the effective use of division staff and resources, and for building teams and coalitions to meet organizational goals and objectives. This includes leading the activities of DGE, assessing the needs and trends, developing breakthrough opportunities, implementing overall strategic planning, and setting policy.

The Division Director fosters and sustains public and private partnerships with other NSF divisions, directorates, Federal agencies, scientific and educational organizations, business, industry, and the academic community to advance the mission and vision of EDU.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Serves as Division Director of the Division of Graduate Education (DGE) and as a member of the leadership team of the Directorate for STEM Education (EDU).
  2. Shares responsibility for developing programmatic focus of the Directorate and efficiently connecting this with the operational functions of the agency.
  3. Leads the activities of DGE, assessing the needs and trends, developing breakthrough opportunities, implementing overall strategic planning, and setting policy.
  4. Fosters and sustains public and private partnerships with other NSF divisions, directorates, Federal agencies, scientific and educational organizations, business, industry, and the academic community to advance the mission and vision of EDU.


Requirements

  1. Background investigation may be required.
  2. Selective Service registration required for male applicants, unless exempt.
  3. Requires an Executive Branch Personnel Public Financial Disclosure OGE-278.


Qualifications

The successful candidate will possess an established record of significant achievement in research, administration, and increasing leadership responsibility in academe, industry or government. Additionally, the Division Director must be experienced and competent in technical, financial and administrative management.

Mandatory Technical Qualifications (MTQs)

The successful candidate must have documented evidence of the technical qualifications listed below in their application package.

Essential

  1. Recognized professional standing in the STEM and/or STEM education communities, as evidenced by a sustained record of research and professional leadership activities, some of which should focus on graduate STEM education.
  2. Demonstrated knowledge of universities and other academic institutions of higher education where STEM research and/or education research is conducted.
  3. Knowledge of education policy issues at the Federal and/or state level and knowledge of trends, issues, current research and evidence-based practices in graduate STEM education.
  4. Skill in building on and growing the expertise and knowledge of researchers and educators in multiple disciplines to develop and implement approaches and programs that address important cross-cutting challenges in graduate STEM education.


Desired

  1. Education strongly preferred at the Ph.D./Ed.D. level or a combination of education and equivalent professional experience in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) and/or including the social, behavioral, and economic sciences is preferred.


Additional Information

The position recruited under this announcement will be filled under the following appointment option:

Intergovernmental Personnel Act (IPA) Assignment: Individuals eligible for an IPA assignment with a Federal agency include employees of State and local government agencies or institutions of higher education, Indian tribal governments, and other eligible organizations in instances where such assignments would be of mutual benefit to the organizations involved.

Initial assignments under IPA provisions may be made for a period up to two years, with a possible extension for up to an additional two-year period. The individual remains an employee of the home institution and NSF provides the negotiated funding toward the assignee's salary and benefits.
