POSITION SUMMARY

Under the general supervision of the Director of Surgical Services, the Staff RN (Surgical Services) will be responsible for planning and overseeing the nursing care provided to meet the needs of surgical patients. This role includes delivering optimal support to physicians and administering perioperative care through the nursing process, which encompasses assessment, planning, intervention, implementation, and evaluation in accordance with TJC, federal, state, and local regulations, as well as organizational policies.

KEY PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

  1. Thoroughly understand and apply the nursing process.
  2. Continuously assess patients, plan care, and provide both direct and indirect patient care.
  3. Anticipate hemodynamic changes in patients.
  4. Educate patients and/or their families on care procedures.
  5. Administer medications, blood products, and moderate sedation, and assist with anesthesia.
  6. Prepare patients for surgical procedures, including clipping, prepping, and positioning.
  7. Establish and maintain a sterile field using proper techniques.
  8. Perform circulating, scrubbing, and recovery duties as needed.
  9. Understand basic EKG readings and cardiac monitoring.
  10. Participate in Universal Protocol by verifying patient identity, procedure, and site.
  11. Administer treatments, manage wound care, and apply dressings.
  12. Maintain and clean surgical suites and recovery equipment, including autoclaves and electrocautery units.
  13. Communicate equipment and supply needs to the Charge Nurse and Director of Surgical Services.
  14. Report maintenance needs and hazardous conditions to the Charge Nurse and Director of Surgical Services.
  15. Ensure compliance with infection control, OSHA, and safety standards.
  16. Engage in ongoing education and training.
  17. Maintain facilities in accordance with TJC, federal, state, and organizational policies.
  18. Monitor stock levels and expiration dates in central processing.
  19. Document surgical cases accurately in the posting book and computer systems.
  20. Handle and prepare specimens correctly.
  21. Provide comprehensive reports when transferring patient care responsibilities.
  22. Set up sterile trays and packages for autoclaving, maintaining accurate records.
  23. Operate Steris machines, keeping detailed records of usage and testing.
  24. Perform other duties as assigned or necessary.

Qualifications:

Education: Completion of high school and graduation from an accredited registered nursing program.

Training: A degree in nursing from an accredited institution.

Licensure and Certification: Must possess and maintain an unencumbered State of Georgia RN license, BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications are required. ACLS/PALS must be obtained within 90 days of hire. CNOR certification is preferred.

Experience: Six months to one year of relevant experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
