Utilize your Commercial Driver's License (CDL) to contribute to the vital work of the Commonwealth of Virginia.

As a successful candidate for the Maintenance Specialist position, you will be skilled in operating a variety of hand and power tools (such as chainsaws and weed eaters) as well as heavy machinery (including dump trucks, loaders, backhoes, and tractors with attachments). Your role will involve working collaboratively to clear drainage systems, manage brush cutting, perform pothole repairs, establish work zones, and execute various skilled and manual labor tasks essential for road maintenance projects.

Key Duties Include:

  • Responding to emergency roadway situations and severe weather events, preparing and operating equipment for snow and ice removal, and addressing hazardous road conditions.
  • Preparing and cleaning work zones while implementing traffic control measures.
  • Demonstrating adherence to proper safety protocols and work site protection techniques.
  • Conducting pre-trip inspections and performing preventive maintenance on a range of equipment.

The Commonwealth of Virginia operates as an emergency response agency, and this position plays a crucial role in fulfilling its operational requirements. You may be called upon to work outside of standard hours during emergency situations such as severe weather, flooding, or traffic incidents.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ability to adhere to safety policies, procedures, and programs.
  • Knowledge of maintenance equipment, materials, and methods related to roadways and roadside areas.
  • Demonstrated experience in operating equipment comparable to that used in highway maintenance and construction.
  • Capacity to perform heavy manual labor, including lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs frequently.
  • Proficiency in the operation and upkeep of hand and power tools.
  • Ability to obtain a CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain it thereafter.
  • Willingness to work in adverse weather conditions and respond to emergencies and disasters outside of normal hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Additional Considerations:

  • Possession of a valid CDL and relevant endorsements.
  • Recent experience with heavy manual labor and operation of heavy machinery.
  • Experience in performing preventive maintenance and minor repairs on equipment.
  • Experience in operating heavy machinery during emergency operations, including snow removal and response to storms and accidents.
  • Flagger certification and experience in work zone setup.

For CDL holders, additional requirements include:

Safety footwear and other personal protective equipment (PPE) are mandatory for job performance, with reimbursement available up to $200 annually.

This position is classified as essential, requiring all associated duties to be performed during emergencies, which may involve exposure to adverse weather conditions and disaster response. Work outside of standard business hours may be necessary.

The Commonwealth utilizes a market-based pay program, which may not align with traditional pay bands.

Note: Equipment Operators hired without a valid CDL must obtain their CDL within 11 months of hire and cannot operate commercial vehicles until they have received the necessary licensure and medical certification.
