KERA engages over 4.5 million individuals monthly through various platforms including KERA TV, KERA News, KXT, KERA Arts, WRR, and the Denton Record Chronicle. For over six decades, KERA has been a trusted source for educational content, community involvement, and lifelong learning opportunities.

We are committed to reflecting the growing diversity of our audience and encourage candidates from varied backgrounds and perspectives to explore employment opportunities at KERA.

POSITION OVERVIEW:
We are seeking a reporter eager to cover significant events such as the Cliburn International Piano competition or provide behind-the-scenes insights at Broadway Dallas. This individual will recognize the importance of major concerts by artists like Taylor Swift or Beyonce in North Texas, alongside developments in productions by Taylor Sheridan. The reporter will actively monitor national platforms, social media, and cultivate local contacts to ensure timely reporting of these cultural narratives. A true cultural enthusiast, this reporter will explore news and trends within North Texas' vibrant arts landscape.

This role involves crafting and producing a variety of content, from daily news segments to comprehensive features across all KERA platforms, including 90.1 KERA News and The Denton Record-Chronicle. This position presents an excellent opportunity for a meticulous, insightful reporter with innovative ideas and strong journalistic abilities.

KERA operates The Texas Newsroom, a collaborative regional news hub with public radio stations statewide and NPR, allowing the Arts Reporter’s stories to reach local, state, and often national audiences. The ideal candidate will skillfully contextualize local narratives within broader frameworks.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Generate, report, and produce a diverse array of daily news, interviews, and features for radio and online platforms that connect audiences to the music, arts, and culture of North Texas.
  • Voice and produce segments focused on arts and events for a daily talk show.
  • Stay informed on regional arts developments and contribute insights to national and statewide partners.
  • Foster and maintain relationships within the community surrounding the arts, including musicians, artists, arts organization leaders, curators, and cultural experts.
  • Collaborate effectively as part of KERA's arts team, engaging with staff and partners from WRR, KERA News, Denton Record-Chronicle, KXT, and various statewide collaborations to enhance storytelling and share compelling ideas.
  • Create distinctive audio and digital narratives that highlight the KERA listening area while providing statewide and national relevance.
  • Report on breaking news in North Texas and beyond, which may require flexibility in working hours.
  • Participate in the rotating on-call schedule for the newsroom.
  • Engage actively in KERA fundraising initiatives.

As a KERA Employee:

  • Contribute to KERA's commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging.
  • Align work with KERA's mission, vision, and values, adhering to all company policies and procedures.
  • Undertake additional responsibilities as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR SUCCESS:
We believe that a robust organization is built on a diverse workforce with varied skills, experiences, and passions. If you possess some of the following qualifications, we encourage you to apply and share your story with us:

  • 1-3 years of experience in journalism, mass communication, or a related field.
  • Strong audio reporting and production capabilities, along with proficient news writing skills.
  • Ability to generate engaging and creative story concepts.
  • Flexibility to switch between different journalistic styles, from urgent reporting to feature writing.
  • Commitment to diversity in reporting and sourcing.
  • Passion for journalism focused on music, arts, and culture.
  • Familiarity with Associated Press style, sound news judgment, and adherence to KERA/NPR ethics and editorial standards.
  • Enthusiasm for public media journalism and serving a diverse audience in North Texas.
  • Reliable transportation for offsite assignments.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Expertise in music, arts, and culture.
  • Experience in public radio production.
  • Three or more years of professional journalism experience.
  • Knowledge of the arts, music, and cultural landscape in North Texas.
  • Fluency in Spanish or other languages prevalent in Texas.
  • Experience with multimedia production, including photography or video, and familiarity with content management systems.

SALARY RANGE:
$57,000-$65,000 annually, based on experience.

BENEFITS:

  • Generous vacation (3 weeks), sick leave (8 days), personal time (2 days), and holidays (11).
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • KERA-paid short and long-term disability, basic life insurance, and AD&D insurance.
  • Flexible scheduling and a hybrid work environment.
  • 401k plan with KERA contribution eligibility after six months of service.
  • A company culture dedicated to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
  • Robust employee assistance program available to employees and their households.

WORK LOCATION:
KERA supports a hybrid working model, with expectations for this position to work from the Dallas office a portion of the time.

APPLICATION PROCESS:
Interested candidates should complete the application on KERA's employment page and attach a resume. An optional cover letter to provide additional insights about yourself is welcome but not mandatory.
