Position Overview:
The role of the Senior Mechanic involves conducting thorough inspections, diagnosing issues, and executing repairs on a variety of gasoline and diesel machinery for municipal operations. This position operates under general oversight, allowing for independent development of work methodologies and processes.
Key Responsibilities:
- Diagnose and repair diverse gasoline and diesel machinery, including small gas engines and electrical systems.
- Overhaul major components such as engines, transmissions, clutches, brakes, air conditioning units, and differentials.
- Repair and rebuild essential parts like carburetors, front ends, alternators, and hydraulic systems.
- Perform comprehensive tune-ups on diesel engines, which includes replacing and testing injectors, as well as adjusting valves and engine timing.
- Conduct minor welding tasks as required.
Preventive Maintenance:
- Service and execute preventive maintenance on city-owned vehicles, ensuring all fluid levels are checked, oil and filters are changed, and tires are rotated and repaired as necessary.
- Conduct vehicle inspections, including brake checks and replacements of shoes, pads, wheel cylinders, and master cylinders; turn drums and rotors as needed.
Tools and Equipment:
- Utilize various tools and equipment such as brake lathes, electrical testers, engine analyzers, and standard mechanic tools to diagnose and perform maintenance on city vehicles and equipment.
Additional Duties:
- Make road calls as necessary and manage vehicle deliveries and pickups.
- Address and resolve complaints by providing assistance, information, and solutions as required.
- Perform other related tasks as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Completion of vocational or technical school or equivalent experience.
- A minimum of three (3) years of relevant experience or a combination of education, training, and experience.
Certifications:
- Automotive and Diesel Mechanic Certification is required.
- A valid Commercial Driver's License is mandatory.
Physical Requirements:
- The position requires physical exertion, including lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling, with the ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force regularly.
Work Environment:
- The role may expose the worker to various environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures, noise, and vibration, which could pose health hazards despite safety precautions.
