Position Overview
The Registered Respiratory Therapist, under the supervision of the Department Director/Manager and Medical Director, applies advanced knowledge and skills to deliver direct, age-appropriate, and culturally sensitive patient care. This includes ensuring adequate ventilation and oxygenation through the use of medical gases and respiratory equipment.
Key Responsibilities
- Administers respiratory medications and conducts invasive procedures such as arterial blood sampling, endotracheal intubation/extubation, and tracheostomy care, as outlined in the competency grid.
- Acts as a clinical resource and engages in patient and staff education.
- Performs comprehensive respiratory assessments, documenting findings and notifying physicians of any abnormalities.
- Reviews electronic medical records to confirm physician orders and medication lists for all assigned patients.
- Implements therapy modifications to ensure care appropriateness, utilizing approved oxygen and aerosol protocols.
- Initiates mechanical ventilation as per physician orders and conducts ventilator management for all patients on ventilation.
- Conducts arterial sampling and moderate complexity lab tests, ensuring compliance with policies for panic values.
- Responds to medical alerts and maintains airway management.
- Assists physicians during bronchoscopy procedures as needed.
- Documents all assessments and procedures in the electronic medical record.
- Collaboratively implements critical care pathways and standards of care.
- Performs additional duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
- Associate Degree from an accredited Respiratory Therapy program or eligibility to take the NBRC RRT examinations.
Experience
- Completion of new hire orientation within the probationary period.
- Successful completion of annual competency assessments within the probationary period.
Licensure and Certifications
- Registered by the National Board for Respiratory Care with RRT credential.
- Current state Respiratory Care Practitioner License.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required; additional certifications (ACLS, PALS, NRP) may be required based on specialty area.
- Participation in the National Board of Respiratory Care's searchable registry is mandatory for the duration of employment.
Preferred Qualifications
Education
- Associate of Science or Bachelor's degree in Respiratory Therapy.
Experience
- 1-2 years of experience in specialty areas such as adult critical care or neonatal/pediatrics.
- Specialized training and experience in pulmonary function and cardiac testing.
Certifications
- Current certifications in BLS, ACLS, and PALS for adult critical care.
- Current certifications in BLS, PALS, and NRP for neonatal/pediatric specialties.
Core Competencies
- Ability to perform detailed respiratory assessments and document findings accurately.
- Strong communication skills for effective collaboration with healthcare teams.
