Job Description and Duties

As a Heavy Equipment Mechanic Apprentice with the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), you will work under close supervision from a CT Highway Mechanic Supervisor to learn and perform progressively skilled work in the repair and maintenance of heavy highway equipment and automotive equipment. This three-year apprentice-training program is designed to qualify you to compete for journey level status as a Caltrans Heavy Equipment Mechanic.

Responsibilities
  • Perform repairs and maintenance on heavy highway equipment and automotive equipment
  • Work in an indoor shop environment, with occasional outdoor work
  • Travel may be required
  • Exposure to high decibels of noise, dirt, and products that may contain chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer and/or birth defects
Requirements
  • Pass a drug screening prior to being hired
  • Hold a valid and unrestricted Class C driver's license
  • Possession of a valid driver's license is required when operating a state-owned or leased vehicle
Benefits

Working Conditions

Employees will normally work in an indoor shop environment, with occasional outdoor work. Shop environments may undergo excessive temperature variance from high heat and humidity to cold and humid. On occasion, employees may have to perform work outdoors. Climate conditions may vary from California coastal, valley, low and high deserts, and mountain.
