POSITION SUMMARY

Under the general oversight of a designated Police supervisor or the Crossing Guard Supervisor, this role involves preparing designated crossing areas and assisting in the secure passage of children at intersections. The incumbent is responsible for promoting adherence to traffic rules among children and ensuring their safe transit to educational institutions.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

None.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintain a designated post at a crossing; manage traffic flow and signals where children cross on their way to school.
  • Report any infractions by children or motorists to the Crossing Guard Supervisor or the assigned Police supervisor overseeing the crossing program.
  • Monitor vehicular traffic to determine optimal timing for crossings; guide children and pedestrians into safe crossing zones; assist as necessary to ensure secure crossings.
  • Observe and manage children's behavior, providing education on traffic safety as needed.
  • Activate and deactivate flashing lights to ensure safe crossings; position cones and signage in the crossing area.
  • Participate in training sessions as required to enhance knowledge and professionalism.
  • Document various reports related to work hours and activities as necessary.
  • Foster professional and courteous interactions with children, drivers, and community members encountered during shifts.
  • Clarify traffic regulations to motorists.
  • Complete state-approved training and attend two mandatory training sessions each year led by the Crossing Guard Supervisor.
  • All substitute crossing guards are required to perform at least two crossings per month.
  • Execute other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: High school diploma or GED.

Experience: Related experience is beneficial but not mandatory.

Certifications/Licenses:

  • Valid Utah Driver's License

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

  • Fundamental safety protocols
  • Traffic control challenges

Skills in:

  • Utilizing office equipment, including computer systems and software.

Ability to:

  • Comprehend and articulate traffic regulations; guide the public in following these rules.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with children, drivers, pedestrians, and school representatives.
  • Provide signals to vehicles.
  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships with individuals encountered during work.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods. Capable of lifting and displaying a stop sign while assisting citizens during any shift. Ability to carry and position traffic cones. Exposure to outdoor conditions, traffic noise, weather variations, and mechanical hazards. An annual vision assessment and fitness evaluation are required for this position.
